Officially, Super Mario Run is the first game ever that Nintendo specifically developed to be played in mobile devices. But just recently, the app has achieved a new milestone -- becoming the fastest selling mobile game ever in the history of iOS. Super Mario Run accomplished this by managing to hit 40 million downloads in its first four days since wide release, as revealed as much by a press statement published by Nintendo.
Still, it is worth noting that despite Super Mario Run’s remarkable achievement, things have not always been a bed of roses for the mobile app. Nintendo actually saw its stock take a slight dive after initial reviews of the game were mixed. According to app analyst firm Sensor Tower, Super Mario Run earned as much as $21 million in its first four days, but its stock hits its lowest value since last month. Also, so only around eight percent of mobile users who downloaded, installed, and played the first three levels of the game proceeded to paying the $10 needed to completely unlock all other levels of Super Mario Run.
Is the $10 unlocking fee too high for mobile users? Some seem to think so. A few first adopters have even claimed that the Super Mario Run mobile game is actually a fee app disguising itself as a free app. Players have noted how they are made to pay so soon only after playing the game for 10 minutes or so.
It is far too early to tell how much impact these complaints will cause in the next few weeks or months after the game’s release. Still, there is no denying that many consumers have been waiting for their favorite video game plumber to grace their smartphone display screens for some time now. Nintendo has been trying to avoid entering the smartphone game for years, but due to certain circumstances (namely the less than stellar sales of its flagship console, the Wii U), it was left with little choice but to finally give it a shot.
By any measure, Super Mario Run’s debut is still a qualified success. Expectations, however, have a habit of complicating perceptions of new releases. Remember that Super Mario Run is launching in the wake of Pokemon Go, a mega blockbuster mobile game in its own right. Maybe consumers wanted another Pokemon Go, or at least, a new addictive app that is sold like Pokemon Go. But Super Mario Run does not adopt the multiple in-app purchase approach. Instead, it goes for a one payment deal -- pay the $10 and get to play the game’s more advanced levels.
