After more than a year of trials and tribulations -- including marked improvement coming with any number of versions nicknamed after confectionery treats -- Google's Android mobile operating system has finally become an undeniable force in the smartphone market.
According to a survey conducted by Change Wave Research, Android use has quadrupled since September. With the strong adoption of the Motorola Droid leading the charge, 4% of smartphone users reported using the operating system. Moreover, 21% of those intending to purchase a smartphone within the next 90 days said they'd prefer to have an Android device -- a 15% increase in just three months.
The survey's report also revealed a number of additional (relatively intriguing) trends:
Android OS is now second to the Apple iPhone's OS in consumer preference
Preference for Apple iPhone's OS fell 4% since September
12.8% of survey respondents said they planned on buying a smartphone in the next 90 days (reportedly the second highest percentage ever recorded in a ChangeWave survey)
13% of respondents who indicated that they planned on buying a smartphone in the next 90 days said they would purchase a Motorola device, a dramatic increase in preference from just 1% in September
9% of respondents who indicated that they planned on buying a smartphone in the next 90 days said they would purchase a device made by Android veteran HTC, an increase of 4% since September
