T-Mobile is definitely trying to give users another reason to jump to its network. Aside from stating its intention of buying out switching customers' equipment installment or leasing plans, the carrier is also guaranteeing that prices will not be adjusted for its existing subscribers. Moreover, T-Mobile stressed that the unlimited 4G LTE will stay unlimited for at least a couple of years. As for subscribers who are currently under the carrier's promotional four-line, 10 gigabyte, $100 family plan, that offer now stands permanently.
Previously, T-Mobile had a program in which it would pay off the early termination fees of customers who are willing to switch to its network. Offering to buy out the equipment installment or leasing plans of those same customers appears to be a natural progression. And it is evidence that T-Mobile is ready to compete with its competitors, most especially Sprint who has also been on a tear lately when it comes to promotions and special offers.
As for Verizon Wireless and AT&T, they may need to watch out. Both carriers are in the process of getting rid of early termination fees in favor of monthly device payments, which essentially lock users with a particular service. Verizon has its Edge, while AT&T has its Next. In these programs, instead of signing a contract with early termination fees, the customer would pay for a handset in monthly installments over a specific period of time. If a customer wants to opt out early, he must pay the full balance of the cost of the handset.
This is where T-Mobile comes in. It will pay off the balance, shouldering the cost of the handset instead of the early termination fees. Of course, to avail of T-Mobile's offer, customers will need to surrender their old handset and get a new one from T-Mobile. The carrier will then give the customer a trade-in amount for the handset, plus a prepaid card with the balance of the outstanding phone payments after the customer furnishes the carrier's bill to T-Mobile. As for the lease that competitor Sprint is offering its customers, T-Mobile says it will pay that off, too.
