T-Mobile is looking to launch its full 5G offering across the United States by the end of this decade. Indeed, the third biggest wireless carrier in the country is planning to leverage the low band 600 MegaHertz airwaves it had recently acquired (for a sum of $8 billion) in order to bring its ambition of being the first major mobile operator in America to debut a commercially available 5G network to mobile users.
According to Neville Ray, the chief technical officer of T-Mobile, the first deployment of the 5G airwaves will start about a couple of years from now. The major US wireless carrier will be taking part of the new 600 MegaHertz airwaves and use them for LTE, while the remaining spectrum will be utilized for 5G network purposes.
In its 5G plans, T-Mobile is putting more attention to achieving wider coverage, and not necessarily just faster connection speed. It is sort of a contrast to what the other mobile operators appear to be doing, especially industry leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T, both of whom seem to be focusing more on higher band spectrum that can facilitate ultra fast connection speeds (1 gbps) that will likely give home Internet offerings a run for their money.
Some may remember that back in February early this year, Verizon Wireless had declared its intentions of commencing 5G trials in no less than 11 major metropolitan areas in the US within the first six months of this year. As for AT&T, it was reported about five months ago that the wireless carrier was joining forces with Intel in conducting 5G testing in the states of Texas and Indiana. If AT&T’s trials go well, it is planning a much bigger deployment nationwide.
It is pretty obvious why everybody would be excited about 5G (which is short for 5th Generation). It goes without saying that today’s wireless technology has evolved so much since 1G debuted around a quarter century ago, when mobile phones first became popular devices. 2G went on to usher text messaging, while 3G facilitated multitasking (voice calls, text messaging, and Internet surfing). By the time 4G came, it took everything 3G offered at significantly higher speeds, making way for better and quicker sharing of files, audio tracks, and video content.
But 5G will represent a giant leap in wireless tech. Not only will it connect smartphones and tablet devices, but virtually everything -- automobiles, home appliances, and even connected cities. And that is not to mention download speeds, which will even be faster compared to today’s 4G.
