T-Mobile has recently introduced IoT Access packs, a couple of new plans that start at $20 a year per mobile device for 5 megabytes of data every month. What should make the new offering appealing to customers is the fact that the pricing gets reduced to $6 a year per device after the first twelve months. Moreover, the major US wireless carrier is also offering an unlimited data plan at 64 kbps at a price of $25 a year per device. Plus, for a limited time only, customers can also enjoy a $5 discount off the first year per device. Lastly, both packs will be including the cost of the Sequans module by way of a bill credit from the mobile operator, which can amount up to $16 every module.
It is quite possible that the new IoT Access packs are T-Mobile’s way of responding to IoT related services already being offered by other carriers, especially industry leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T. T-Mobile, though, is promoting its latest offerings as simpler options compared to those provided by its rivals. As explained by Doug Chartier, the senior vice president of T-Mobile, other mobile operators tend to over complicate the concept of the Internet of Things.
Still, comparing IoT service offerings from carriers is easier said than done, mainly because each provider often has its own unique take on the service. Take AT&T’s for instance -- the plans start at $25 for a single gigabyte of data and 500 SMS that can be consumed over a period of one year, and top out at $100 for 5 gigabytes of data and 1,500 SMS good for a couple of years. The gigabytes can be used on a thousand mobile devices connected to AT&T’s network. Furthermore, the carrier also offers an IoT Starter Kit for a price of $99. As for the Big Red, its machine to machine plans are offered in three share groups, basically allowing customers to share data between plans within every tier. The basic share group starts at $9 a month offering one megabyte of data, and then tops out at $30 a month with 25 megabytes of data. The priciest share group offers a single plan priced at $100 a month offering 5 gigabytes of data. These are made available only to business clientele with at least five corporate liable end user (CLEU) lines of service that come with a Major Account Agreement with Verizon Wireless.
