Here is some good news for mobile users who have relatives in Cuba or are planning to travel to Cuba -- T-Mobile is now offering budget friendly calling rates to the island nation, at the same time, allowing its subscribers to use their mobile devices while visiting the country. Just this week, the third biggest wireless carrier in the United States revealed that it had inked an interconnect and roaming collaboration with Empresa De Telecomunicaciones De Cuba, SA (ETECSA), a mobile network service provider based in Cuba.
By means of its partnership with ETECSA, T-Mobile can now provide cheap voice call services to any of its subscribers who have family and friends living in Cuba. Moreover, beginning on July of this year, T-Mobile’s customers will now be able to bring their handsets with them when visiting the island nation, and still enjoy access to voice calls, text messaging, and even data roaming.
T-Mobile’s deal with ETECSA will also mean that subscribers will get to enjoy savings of 65 percent when making phone calls to Cuba. Indeed, voice calls made to landline and wireless phone numbers in Cuba from the US will cost $0.60 a minute with the monthly “Stateside International Talk” service that is priced at an extra $15 each month.
Other major US wireless carriers such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint already have roaming deals to Cuba. But in the case of T-Mobile, it claims that it caters to more mobile users with relatives to Cuba than any other wireless carrier operating in America. According to the wireless carrier, it serves over one third of all mobile users born in Cuba but now based in the US, which is considerably more than AT&T and easily three fold the number of the Big Red’s customers. Lastly, T-Mobile has stated that in its international roaming program, Cuba is the most the requested addition to the roster of countries.
Even though a half century of trade embargo between the US and Cuba has negatively affected the island nation’s economy in the last few few decades, things are starting to look up ever since the US began normalizing its relations with Cuba about seven years ago. Both countries have since reestablished diplomatic ties, and as a result, trade relations between the two nations have improved.
Of course, this also means that more and more Americans will be traveling to Cuba either for business or recreation purposes. For T-Mobile’s subscribers, visiting the island nation will be made easier because of their roaming perks. As for those who just want to reconnect with their loved ones in Cuba, they can now make a call at a much friendly rate.
