T-Mobile may still only be the third biggest wireless carrier in the United States, but it is gaining on industry leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T in terms of its 4G LTE coverage. Just this week, top executives of T-Mobile stated that the company’s 4G LTE service has now been made available to over 300 million mobile users all over the US. That number is around the same coverage as Verizon’s and AT&T’s high speed networks. On top of that, T-Mobile has also revealed that it is on its way to posting 1 million additional square miles of LTE coverage to its existing network infrastructure. For mobile users, this means that they will be able to detect a T-Mobile network even in areas previously not reached by the wireless network, such as Missoula, Montana, and certain locations in North and South Dakota.
According to Neville Ray, the chief technical officer of T-Mobile, the wireless carrier has expanded its LTE coverage more than two fold in the last few quarters. Ray further added that the company is currently expanding into new locations with its 4G LTE service, particularly in previously unreached metros and cities as well as in select rural areas across the US.
Among the big four wireless carriers in America (namely Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint), the two leaders atop the industry were lording over the bottom two for years, with T-Mobile and Sprint not even getting close to the capabilities, infrastructure, and network coverage of Verizon and AT&T. But recently, T-Mobile has been making an aggressive push to close the gap. Before, the wireless carrier was only focusing in and around metropolitan areas. But now, T-Mobile is now in a position to provide encompassing coverage to its subscribers, even in far flung rural regions.
Among the four major wireless carriers in the US, T-Mobile has always been the more active in terms of marketing and promotions. But the company itself knew that special offers can only get you so far -- it needed to improve its network infrastructure, too. And that is exactly what T-Mobile has been busy doing for the last few years, enhancing its coverage significantly. While it may be late in joining in on the 4G LTE fun, it did manage to catch up with the industry leaders, and even outdoing Verizon Wireless and AT&T in certain cities and metropolitan areas.
Can T-Mobile sustain its momentum? That remains to be seen for now, considering that Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and even Sprint will surely not just sit idly by. Still, T-Mobile has proven that it can indeed compete with the leaders, and in the eyes of consumers, that may be the difference in urging them to choose T-Mobile over the other wireless carriers.
