In the 1990s, Tamagotchi was a craze back then. It basically involved taking care of a virtual pet (from egg-hood to adulthood -- don’t ask why, it was the 90s), and if users failed to do that, their Tamagotchi pet would “die.” Now, a new mobile app is trying to bring this same concept to the 2010s. The funny thing is, this particular app is for fitness tracking.
Yup, the Tep app is a fitness tracking app that employs a different (albeit fun) way of getting people to work out. Specifically, it makes use of a virtual pet giraffe (hear us out), which users can take care of, not by providing with virtual food or medicine, but by accomplishing challenges that involve physical activity. In other words, users take care of their pet giraffes by working out.
Every time users perform a specific task, such as taking a walk, going for a run, or riding a bike, with the Tep app, they get earn coins that can be redeemed for food and drink, which are then used to feed the pet giraffe. These coins can also be used to personalize the pet giraffe (fancy footwear and even hats) and its surroundings (colorful backgrounds).
Once the user notifies the Tep app about which type of physical activity he plans on doing, the app will start monitoring the user’s movements via GPS, and will record data such as distance traveled, average pace, speed, and duration, plus the amount of calories burned doing that specific activity. The Tep app can also be synced with a Fitbit or Jawbone account. Users can even choose to share the results of their workout to others, just like any other fitness tracking apps (but without cute virtual pet giraffes, though).
A fitness tracking app combined with the charm of Tamagotchis is an interesting concept for sure. People have different motivations for working out, but it is fun to note that somebody has thought of making a virtual pet’s health and well-being dependent on how well and how often its owner works out. And of course, there is the nostalgia factor. The people who actually owned Tamagotchi pets in the 1990s are more likely to be the ones needing to work out now.
The Tep app is available as a free download for Android, iOS, and even Windows Phone users. According to Akos Boros, the chief executive officer and co-founder at Tep, his crew is already working on integrating the mobile app to the Apple Watch.
