TextNow Wireless is offering the revamped Motorola Moto G smartphone for only $14.99, although one may have to add about $9 for shipping. To be clear about it, $14.99 is not the subsidized price of the smartphone in exchange for entering into a two-year agreement. $14.99 is the amount you pay to own the handset right there and then.
It may sound too good to be true, but as always, there are a few caveats. Number one -- the handset being offered is the first-generation Moto G model. Now, there is nothing wrong with this model, and all things considered, the first-gen Moto G is a good choice when you talk about entry-level smartphone offerings. But the fact remains that it is only limited to 3G data and can only offer 8 gigabytes of internal storage (with no support for microSD storage expansion). In other words, this device may not be to everyone's taste.
And another thing -- the handset is inescapably tied to TextNow Wireless for service, or at least, for traditional smartphone service. Similar to how Republic Wireless operates, TextNow Wireless takes full advantage of Wi-Fi whenever it can. And it is just not using Wi-Fi for text messaging and data, it is also utilizing it for phone calls.
Having said these, TextNow Wireless still presents a good deal with its plans. For instance, its service plans start at just $18.99, and already gives you 750 rollover voice minutes and 500 megabytes of data. That may not be much, but should be serviceable especially for first-time smartphone owners who spend most of their time connected via Wi-Fi. Still, those who want more inclusions can check out the Grande plan, which offers 1,250 minutes and 1 gigabyte of data for just $26.99. Or, you can also opt not to bother getting any service at all and just purchase the Moto G. That is, if you don't mind tethering the phone to any of those free FreedomPop hotspots whenever you want to go online.
As for the Moto G being offered -- limited storage aside, the device is not bad. You get a 4.6-inch display screen, a pair of cameras on each side, and Android 4.4 KitKat, which although not the newest is still the most widely used version of the Android mobile operating system. And you get to enjoy all of this by spending only fifteen bucks.
