Every mobile user out there is familiar with this particular problem -- the cracked display. And considering that the iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones in the world, cracked displays happen often to owners of Apple’s handset. But most people do not realize that cracked iPhone screens can be repaired by a machine called the Horizon Machine.
This technology, however, is proprietary. This means that because Apple has sole ownership of the machines, it has every right to use it only for its purposes. Thus, Horizon Machines are only likely to be found in Apple retail stores across the globe, and in a very limited number of third party repair centers
But that is about to change -- according to a recent report published by Reuters, the iPhone maker is looking to supply Horizon Machines to around 400 third party repair centers in 25 countries around the world before the end of this year. To date, the company has some 4,800 authorized service providers across the globe, and the 400 repair centers to be supplied with Horizon Machines represent around 8 percent of that total number.
Apple actually had launched a pilot program before that also provided Horizon Machines to a few third party repair centers located in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, USA, London in the United Kingdom, Shanghai in China, and Singapore, plus in Best Buy outlets based in the cities of Miami (Florida) and Minneapolis (Minnesota).
Repair centers, authorized or otherwise, often fix cracked iPhone screens without using Apple’s Horizon Machines. Several states in America have already proposed laws that would have phone makers offer repair manuals, diagnostic tools, and other genuine replacement parts at competitive pricing to third party fixers and even to the consumers directly. The main objective of the legislation is to lend a helping hand to smaller repair centers, especially in allowing them to offer top quality repair services, and even letting them reduce repair fees to more affordable rates.
For now, it has not been made clear yet just how much Apple is being paid by its third party partners for the use of the Horizon Machines. But the tech giant did confirm that it has indeed been planning to deploy the machines to 400 authorized third party repair centers in more than two dozen countries around the world within the year. All things considered, this should be welcome news for iPhone users based in those countries, especially those who may be accident prone.
