According to new data from Nielsen, people are spending more time than ever using their mobile apps. In a report recently published, Nielsen's data showed that the time mobile users spent on apps are up 63 percent over the last couple of years. Indeed, during the final quarter of 2012, mobile users spent 23 hours and 2 minutes every month using their apps. During the fourth quarter of last year, that amount of time has ballooned to 37 hours and 28 minutes.
Nielsen's study also determined that even though app stores offered millions of apps for mobile users to choose from, people only use about 26 or 27 apps every month. As many may have suspected, these 26 or 27 apps are also the ones being used more frequently.
This more or less reinforces the report Nielsen made last year, suggesting that for most people, they can only use a certain number of mobile apps every month. In that particular study, Nielsen found out that despite the increasing number of apps made available month after month, year after year, the total number of apps being used by consumers on a monthly basis have only slightly increase in the last few years. Based on Nielsen's findings, people used an average number of 23.3 apps per month in 2011, 26.5 apps per month in 2012, and 26.8 apps per month in 2013.
For the final quarter of 2014, Nielsen broke down its data according to gender. Women used 26.3 apps per month, while men used 27.2 apps per month. Combining both genders, the average is 26.7 apps per month.
Nielsen compiled its data by using a background app on Android and iOS. With permission from background users, Nielsen gathers information from 5,000 panelists across several demographic and ethnic categories. The total collected data, however, is skewed a little bit in favor of Android (58 percent of all panelists, while iOS comprises 42 percent).
Based on ethnic parameters, Nielsen's data shows that African Americans use the most mobile apps every month (at 30.3 apps per month), at the same time, spend the most hours, with 43 hours per month. For other ethnic groups: Hispanics spend 41 hours and 31 minutes; Asian Americans spend 27 hours and 14 minutes; white non-Hispanics spend 35 hours and 25 minutes.
Not surprisingly, Nielsen's data shows that apps belonging to the Entertainment category are the most frequently used. This category is rather broad, covering games, sports, and even sometimes current news.
