Ting has decided to drop its data prices, and the carrier is doing it in a very unique way. After its customers go beyond the first gigabyte, each gigabyte of mobile data used thereafter, shared or combined across all handsets under one account, will be priced at $10 a gigabyte. For current customers of Ting, the price drop will apply in their next full billing cycle. As for new customers, the change in data prices will take effect immediately upon sign up.
Michael Goldstein, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Ting, highlighted the carrier’s approach to delivering mobile services. The pay for what you use structure certainly gives users an opportunity to pool and share voice call minutes, text messages, and data gigabytes efficiently. Families or enterprises with more than one handset can wisely take full advantage of this set up. More importantly, the price drop should equate to more savings for customers, especially those with substantial data requirements.
Goldstein also explained that for some time now, Ting has been trying to achieve better data prices for its customers. He noted that the company has been making some efforts to encourage its carrier partners to get better wholesale data rates, and now that Ting has done exactly that, it has moved on to passing the savings directly to customers via the amended pricing of its data options.
The new Ting data pricing structure is summarized as follows:
Small -- Maximum of 100 megabytes of data, priced at $3 (same as before)
Medium -- Maximum of 500 megabytes of data, now priced at $10 (previously priced at $12)
Large -- Maximum of 1 gigabyte of data, now priced at $16 (previously priced at $19)
XL -- Maximum of 2 gigabytes of data, now priced at $20 (previously priced at $29)
XL+ -- 2 gigabytes of data or more, now priced at $10 a gigabyte (previously priced at $15 a gigabyte)
Ting is proud of the fact that its mobile plans do not come with any contracts, penalties for overages, or any hidden charges. Customers of the wireless carrier can expect to pay only for the actual usage levels they hit, with voice call minutes, text messages, and data megabytes or gigabytes each billed separately. Families, groups, or businesses can choose to get unlimited handsets under a single account, and then enjoy generous savings by sharing usage. On any account, active handsets cost only $6 a month.
