Many agree that traveling to other countries is fun -- well except when you have to deal with roaming charges (which can be often borderline exorbitant). But Tink Labs, a firm from Hong Kong, is offering a solution to this problem -- specifically by providing custom made handsets in hotel rooms around the world specially for travelers. These phones would then come with free data, which means that guests can make full use of them when going online, and yup, not worry about roaming fees.
So how did Tink Labs came up with this concept? It sort of began about half a decade ago when Terence Kwok, the chief executive officer and founder of Tinker Labs, tried to rent a handset and a SIM card at the Hong Kong airport. He observed that what most mobile users do when they get to the airport is to leave immediately. So instead of targeting travelers at airports, he decided that offering a custom made handset at hotel rooms might be a better idea.
Fast forwarding to today and Kwok’s company now offers the Handy phone in several markets. Most consumers may not have heard of Handy phones, but these devices actually are already made available in 20 cities across Europe and Asia. And the Handy phone is about to expand to other mobile markets.
Of course, the ultimate aim is to make the Handy phone as accessible as ever, and Tink Labs is busy working to get there. As of a week ago, Handy phones were set to land in about a million hotel rooms around the world by the end of 2017. Tink Labs managed to achieve this by striking strategic partnership deals with major hotel chains such as Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG), Crowne Plaza, and even Ritz London.
It goes without saying that mobile users traveling to another country can make full use of the Handy phone. The device happens to come with a data lifeline, plus a local guide preloaded in the handset, providing personalized suggestions as well as direct access to the concierge of whichever hotel the guest is staying.
The good thing about the set up is that the hotels get to benefit, too. Having a Handy phone in their hotel room definitely makes for an interesting marketing hook, which could allow hotels to differentiate themselves from the competition. According to Tink Labs, Handy phones could also help in introducing a new revenue stream for hotels, specifically by advertising paid services to people by way of the custom Android platform and push alerts.
