For fans of takeout coffee, the Starbucks mobile app may be heaven-sent. The app lets users pay for their coffee with the use of their mobile phones. Needless to say, it does provide convenience for the busy coffee drinker -- whenever they get a Caffe Misto, they can just launch the app on the iPhones and pay for their drinks easily.
But now, it appears that the Starbucks app is getting updated. Specifically, it is being integrated with the Uber service. What exactly does this mean for Starbucks enthusiasts? Well, for one thing, if you are itching to get yourself a cup of hot coffee, but you do not have a means of transporting yourself to the nearest Starbucks outlet, you can just tap the Uber button on your iPhone, and it should be able to search an Uber car that can take you to your favorite Starbucks branch.
Of course, to be able to take advantage of the Uber integration, there are certain requirements that must be met. First of all, you will need to install the Uber app in your device in order for you to use it in tandem with the Starbucks app. Also, the service will only function in certain locations where Uber is available. So if you are based in an area where Uber is a no-no (like Germany, for example), you will have to get by with your old-school way of getting your caffeine fix.
While the Uber way might be considered a sort of pricey way to buy coffee, it does pose advantages to certain types of people. For instance, for people who are visiting a city they are not familiar with, they can make full use of the Uber integration to take them to the nearest Starbucks within range.
Uber has definitely been busy teaming up with various establishments during the last few weeks. As a matter of fact, they have launched a free application programming interface (API) to other mobile developers. This certainly is a good way of encouraging third party developers to integrate Uber into the apps they created.
And it appears that the move has produced results. As of now, Uber has attracted 11 app partners -- there is Starbucks, of course, as well as other establishments like United Airlines, Hyatt Hotels, TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Expensify, Hinge, Momento, Tempo Smart Calendar, Time Out Magazine, and TripCase. It is a diverse list no doubt, but if one looks closely, hotels, travel, and restaurants seem to make sense as partners. After all, Uber is all about getting from point A to point B (by hailing a ride), so partnering with these companies does not seem so unusual.
The Starbucks app is available in iTunes, and be used with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. To run the app, users must have iOS 7.0 or later versions.
