And the rumors continue for Apple’s upcoming 4 inch iPhone, aka the iPhone 5se. This time around, there is talk that the highly awaited smaller iPhone device will be sporting the company’s own A9 chip set (plus its companion processor, the M9) instead of the A8 processor. And even though this device will come with an option for 16 gigabytes of onboard memory, interested buyers also get to choose to purchase an edition that offers 64 gigabytes of internal storage. This basically means that apart from the smaller display screen, 3D Touch technology and high res camera specifications, the new 4 inch iPhone will essentially be an iPhone 6s device, but only more manageable with one hand.
These rumors are reported by 9to5Mac, which has a pretty good record of reporting rumors that turn out to be true. With regards to the iPhone 5se’s A9 chip set, this should make things more interesting for iPhones in general. If the device does feature this processor, then it might have just supplanted the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus because it might not make some sense for iOS users to go for a larger device with slower processing (the iPhone 6 devices) when the iPhone 5se is available (smaller but faster). But once the iPhone 7 arrives several months later, people may no longer pay attention to the iPhone 5se because the newer model (the iPhone 7) will sure to have better and faster processing capabilities.
As for Apple, having a chance to offer a new iPhone model in March (as rumored) that sports an ultra fast chip set may allow it to compete with other high profile smartphone offerings launching during the same time period. It is no secret that Samsung is thinking of releasing its upcoming flagship device, the Galaxy S7 (whose benchmark scores recently leaked), earlier than expected (which is in February of this year, during the Mobile World Congress happening next month in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain), and the iPhone 5se may serve as Apple’s answer to its biggest rival.
And with recent talk of iPhone fatigue, offering a smaller iPhone option may help pick up the slack in sales a little bit. iPhones generally are considered premium range smartphones, but introducing the iPhone 5se could give mobile users, especially in the Chinese market and emerging markets such as India, a less expensive alternative. While phablets are as popular as ever, it might not hurt to do some counter programming, and at the same time, give fans of smaller smartphones a popular and powerful choice of device.
