It was in October of last year when Huawei officially announced its Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro phablet devices. Naturally, the Chinese tech giant is expected to follow up its 2017 big screen offerings this year. But based on recent speculation, it appears that the phone maker is going for an even larger display this time.
According to a report recently published by The Bell (and picked up by XDA Developers), the upcoming Mate 20 Pro (the bigger sibling of the Mate 20, presumably) will be offering an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display that measures a gigantic 6.9 inches. The same report also indicated that the said OLED screen will be manufactured by none other than Samsung.
Speaking of Samsung, the world’s number one seller of smartphone devices itself is expected to release its own flagship phablet offering during the second half of this year. Indeed, a little more than a week ago, rumors had started flying that the Galaxy Note 9 will be making its debut in August, just a couple of months away.
Make no mistake about it, with a speculated 6.38 inch screen, the Galaxy Note 9’s display would still provide some pretty generous real estate. But compared to the rumored 6.9 inch OLED screen of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Samsung’s newest addition to its impressive Galaxy Note lineup of phablet devices would look small-ish.
With just about everyday consuming all sorts of multimedia through mobile devices these days, it is no surprise that today’s most popular phone makers are making handsets with bigger screens. Even Apple is joining in on the party -- per The Bell’s report, it is quite possible that the tech giant will launch a new iPhone model that sports a 6.46 inch display.
But Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro will be like the Godzilla of large screen smartphones, that is if the rumors turn out to be true. At 6.9 inches, the handset would be more small tablet than smartphone. While a bunch of mobile users will rejoice at the thought of watching their favorite streamed shows or playing their favorite mobile games with a screen that big, there will be some consumers who will think it just might be too much to handle. Well in that case, they can always go for the Mate 20, which is rumored to offer a much more manageable 6.1 inch display, which would still be quite commanding.
