Not content with watching all the major wireless carriers in the United States deploy their own HD Voice and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, regional carrier US Cellular has finally decided to join in on the fun.
As reported by Fierce Wireless, the fifth biggest wireless carrier in America is planning to start testing VoLTE in few selected markets in 2015. Ken Meyers, the chief executive officer of US Cellular, has confirmed this during the recent Citi 2015 Internet, Media and Telecommunications Conference held at Las Vegas, Nevada.
Subscribers of US Cellular are naturally excited about the prospect of having crystal-clear HD Voice calls. But Meyers is quick to note that the biggest priority for US Cellular is making sure its LTE network roll-out is completed. Once this is done, the carrier can work on establishing a reliable VoLTE service using its LTE network. With its LTE network, US Cellular is expecting to cover 93 percent of its subscribers, and 88 percent of cellular sites before the end of the first quarter of this year.
There is plenty to be excited about with regards to US Cellular testing VoLTE. For those not in the know, this type of technology facilitates better voice call quality compared to 2G and 3G networks, the current standard being used by the majority of American users.
With VoLTE, US Cellular's customers can enjoy clearer voice calls, minimized dropped calls, and faster video calling capabilities. The technology also allows for simultaneous voice calling and Internet browsing. This is made possible because only a small amount of bandwidth is needed to send voice data. This is definitely welcome news for multi-taskers.
For now, US Cellular has not provided any details yet regarding which specific markets will be tested with VoLTE, or when the trials will commence. The most important thing is that the regional carrier has taken the first step towards establishing its own VoLTE service. It may not rival the services offered by major wireless carriers, but it surely is a solid step in the right direction, and one that is good news for its customers.
Aside from revealing US Cellular's plans to test VoLTE in selected markets during the Citi 2015 Internet, Media and Telecommunications Conference, CEO Meyers also stressed the importance of sustaining network quality, especially in attracting and retaining customers. He also gave information on the selling off of a number of US Cellular's towers and the overhaul of the carrier's business support systems.
