US Cellular has recently decided to grant wireless service, free of charge, to Apple Watch Series 3 units owned by customers who avail of the mobile operator’s Total plans. According to the company, this special offer is made available for a limited time only, but so far, it has not given any specifics with regards to how long the promotional deal will last.
Needless to say, this latest offer from the fifth biggest wireless service provider in America should get the attention of the Big Four. Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all currently offer cellular service for the Apple Watch Series 3, as long as the owners of the smartwatch are willing to pay an additional ten bucks on a monthly basis. While it is true that US Cellular’s offer applies to its Total plans, the wireless carrier did qualify that people who are not currently subscribed to any one of its Total plans can still choose to avail of cellular service for their Apple Watch by paying $4.99 each month.
Ever since it was launched back in September of last year, the Apple Watch Series 3 has generated so much buzz, mainly due to its LTE connectivity. Not surprisingly, the biggest wireless carriers in the United States were eager to start selling the latest generation Apple smartwatch. US Cellular was a bit late to the party, but with its newest promo, it just might be able to catch up with the Big Four.
It is no secret that mobile operators serve as effective distribution channels for selling the Apple Watch. More than four months ago, Counterpoint Research had released a report saying that carriers are increasingly becoming the fastest growing sales channel for the Apple Watch. According to the information collected by the market research firm, around half of all Apple Watch units have been purchased by consumers by way of wireless service providers.
It goes without saying that America’s biggest carriers clearly see a major opportunity in the growing smartwatch market. After all, these operators generally charge customers an additional $10 for cellular service on the Apple Watch. Sure, some of these wireless service providers may be offering the Apple Watch connectivity for free during the first one or three months, but when the trial period ends, most owners of the smartwatch generally decide to sign up for the $10 per month service, just to make sure their Apple Watch unit stays connected.
