According to the latest research findings regarding mobile user behavior (courtesy of Forrester Research), it appears that today's consumers spend more than 85 percent of their time on smartphones using mobile apps. Furthermore, it seems that most of that time, around 84 percent, is spent using just five non-native apps users have downloaded and installed from the App Store.
Of course, those five apps vary depending on each mobile user. As many may have expected, some top five lists may consist of social media apps or game apps, while some may be using mainly apps that provide instant messaging services.
This latest trend actually reinforces the ideas suggested in another recent study conducted by Nielsen, and then subsequently reported on earlier in June this year. In that study, Nielsen's study conclude that mobile users seem to have an upper limit as to how many mobile apps they use very month. While the Nielsen study reported that users would only utilize about 26 to 27 apps a month total, Forrester Research's study looks into where mobile users spend most of their time while using their smartphones.
In getting its data, Forrester Research examined around 2,000 smartphone users based in the United States. The data suggests that communication and social apps make up the most usage percentage among mobile apps, with both app groupings combining to take 21 percent of all usage minutes. Forrester Research decided not to look into calls and text messages, but these types of activities would no doubt boost the 21 percent usage rate.
Forrester Research's data also shows how various companies' apps are faring. Leading the pack, for instance, is social media giant Facebook, which holds 13 percent of all the minutes spent on mobile apps among US users. Following closely behind is Google at 12 percent. Other notable names include Amazon (3 percent), Apple (3 percent), Yahoo (2 percent), Microsoft (1 percent), and eBay (1 percent).
Social media is really doing well, according to Forrester Research's findings. Social media networks grab 14 percent of the total smartphone usage -- that percentage is equivalent to about 25 minutes per day. As expected, Facebook is the leader, with 1.25 billion mobile active users every month.
As for instant messaging apps, they command 4.8 percent of the total smartphone minutes in the US. Around the world, the usage is noticeably higher, with users spending 50 to 200 minutes using these apps on a weekly basis.
