Prepaid users are getting lots of pleasant news in the past few days. Big wireless carriers such as T-Mobile and US Cellular are adding more data to their respective prepaid smartphone plans, while a few prepaid mobile service providers like Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile are offering plans with improved inclusions or restructured pricing.
This time around, the biggest wireless carrier in America, Verizon Wireless, is joining in on the fun. The Big Red has just revealed that it is boosting the data on two of its prepaid plans, specifically, the $45 a month plan and the $60 a month plan. And Verizon is doing it without changing the pricing. The last time Verizon made changes to its prepaid plans was back in November of last year, when it launched its Thanksgetting promo.
To summarize, Verizon’s prepaid plans are now as follows:
$30 a month plan -- Includes unlimited voice calls and unlimited text messaging, with Wi-Fi only data
$45 a month plan -- Includes unlimited voice calls and unlimited text messaging, with 2 gigabytes of data (previously at 1 gigabyte only)
$60 a month plan -- Includes unlimited voice calls and unlimited text messaging, with 5 gigabytes of data (previously at 3 gigabytes only)
On top of all this, Verizon Wireless is giving an extra gigabyte of data to subscribers who have signed up for the Big Red’s automatic payment program. Those who enrolled for the $45 a month plan now have 3 gigabytes of data (boosted from the usual 2 gigabytes of data), while those who enrolled for the $60 a month plan now have 6 gigabytes of data (boosted from the usual 5 gigabytes of data).
In its prepaid plans, Verizon also gives its subscribers the option of getting additional data at any time. Each extra 500 megabytes is made available for $5 and can be used for a period of 30 days. 1 gigabyte for 90 days is also available for $10, as well as 3 gigabytes for 90 days at $20.
It has been a busy fortnight in prepaid mobile. T-Mobile got the ball rolling when it increased the data on its Simply Prepaid plans. US Cellular followed suit by updating its prepaid plan offerings. Boost Mobile, the prepaid arm of major US wireless carrier Sprint, launched new family plans that promise more data at less prices. And just yesterday, Virgin Mobile (yet another of Sprint's prepaid subsidiaries) announced new and less expensive prepaid plans.
