Many industry watchers agree that 5G is still a few years away. But the biggest wireless carrier in the United States is certainly working hard to make sure it is ready as ever when 5G becomes a reality. Just this week, Verizon Wireless has announced that it has figured out the radio specifications for the roll out of its 5G with its vendor partners, basically setting an initial benchmark in which network infrastructure, chips, and mobile devices can be built or configured to provide support for the upcoming technology.
Obviously, this is an important step in realizing a truly consumer accessible 5G service. By working out the radio specs as early as now, the Big Red is in a nice position to be the one to potentially set the agenda for how future 5G standards will be created. After all, this is pretty much what Verizon Wireless did during the emergence of 4G LTE way back a few years.
The great thing about working out the radio specifications is that not only does this expedite the process for Verizon Wireless’ roster of vendor partners, but may also have an influence in other international markets, particularly in the establishment of a worldwide standard when wireless carriers around the world start to introduce their own take on 5G tech. Sure, we still may have to wait until the end of this decade for that to happen, but some foundations have already been laid, e.g. the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is already trying to free up resources to make way for 5G in the US mobile market.
According to Verizon Wireless, it was working on ensuring that is 5G specification would align with KT, a mobile operator based in South Korea who is as eager as the Big Red in making a huge leap into 5G, just in time for the next Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in the county of Pyeongchang in South Korea in 2018.
There is no doubt that a lot of people are already excited to experience for themselves what 5G is all about. And wireless carriers are often very eager in helping build the hype. Verizon Wireless is one of those leading the pack. The industry leader makes no secret about its 5G field tests, and connection speeds of these tests are pretty remarkable. And even if the real thing does not live up to the tests, many tech experts believe that even in its imperfect, infancy stage, 5G should still rock everybody’s world.
