Reuters is reporting that Verizon will limit handset exclusivity agreements to 6 months. Effective immediately, the move comes in response to mounting pressure from lawmakers, smaller carriers, and some consumers.
"Effective immediately for small wireless carriers ... any new exclusivity arrangement we enter with handset makers will last no longer than six months -- for all manufacturers and all devices," Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said in a letter addressed to lawmakers.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Justice launched an initial investigation into major telecom companies, namely AT&T and Verizon, considering whether the two giants have been abusing their formidable market power. The investigation was said to be closely looking into handset exclusivity agreements, citing potential harm to smaller competitors who are unable to land the latest and greatest handsets such as Apple’s much revered iPhone.
