Industry leader Verizon Wireless is planning to announce changes that will deliver more data for its subscribers -- but alas, also increased prices. The low end “S” plan is said to raise its prices by $5 to $35 a month, but will come with 2 gigabytes of data each month. Previously, this plan only offered a gigabyte of data per month. The “M” plan’s pricing will increase by $5 to $50 a month, while its data inclusion will be boosted from 3 gigabytes a month to 4 gigabytes a month. The “L” plan will increase by $10 to $70 a month, but will soon deliver 8 gigabytes of data per month (previously, it came with 6 gigabytes of data per month). The “XL” plan’s price will go up by $10 to $90 a month, with its previous 12 gigabytes of data a month increasing to 16 gigabytes of data a month. As for the “XXL” plan, it will increase by $10 to $110 a month, offering 24 gigabytes of data a month from the previous 18 gigabytes of data a month.
The latest changes to the Big Red’s plans are part of a more extensive effort to restructure its services, including introducing a new rollover data program called Carryover Data, a means for avoiding overage charges (see next paragraph), and giving its subscribers better access to their wireless services while traveling to Mexico and Canada.
The wireless carrier has launched a new MyVerizon mobile that acts like a remote control for managing one’s plans. Via this app, users will be able to activate safety mode, which allows them from avoiding overage fees.
Many industry watchers have observed that the most recent moves from Verizon Wireless sort of mirror other offers already launched by its competitors, especially T-Mobile and Sprint. It is not that surprising, of course, considering how T-Mobile and Sprint have started to steal some of the Big Red’s subscribers.
The major restructuring in Verizon Wireless’ plans, particularly with regards to pricing and data inclusions, was actually hinted at by a spokesperson from the wireless carrier about a week ago. The boost in gigabytes inclusions also further illustrates how today’s mobile users have become more hungry when it comes to extra data. A few years ago, people were only busy checking email messages and browsing the Internet on their mobile devices. But now, watching video content and live streaming all sorts of media have become the new norm.
