It has been about half a decade since the biggest wireless carrier in America has ceased offering an unlimited data plan to its customers. But recently, Verizon Wireless took the opportunity to quietly introduce its new PopData program (currently made available as a beta offering), which basically allows mobile users to take advantage of a link in the My Verizon app in enjoying access to unlimited data, but for either 30 minutes ($2) or an hour ($3) at a time.
For those interested in availing of this new feature, know that the My Verizon app will first check the network in order to determine if there is enough room for a user to enjoy unlimited data access for a given period of time. Moreover, the pass can only be used on the customer’s line of service. However, tethering other handsets to a device using the PopData program is permitted.
As long as users remain with a location adequately covered by the Big Red’s 4G LTE network, then they can expect to keep enjoying unlimited data. Now if they decide to move to another location, and then switch to Verizon’s 3G network, they will still have access to unlimited data. But if their signal is completely cut off, the PopData timer will still keep on running. In order to start enjoying the pass, customers must activate their Location Services for the My Verizon mobile app. But once they start a session, they can choose to deactivate it.
The PopData program essentially allows users to enjoy access to data heavy content (like movies and TV shows) without having to worry about their monthly data allotments getting affected. As for Verizon Wireless, it is a good way of earning extra while making sure that its customers enjoy unlimited data (even for a limited period of time) without overloading its network.
The latest PopData program follows other recent new features from Verizon Wireless. Some may remember that back in June earlier this year, it was reported that the Big Red was planning to launch a Safety Mode option for eliminating overage fees, as well as its a Carryover Data roll over plan. Both eventually were deployed live by the wireless carrier, if the beta testing goes well for the PopData program, it will be destined for a wide roll out too pretty soon.
