In order to be more competitive in terms of prepaid, Verizon Wireless is looking to add a pair of new options to its prepaid plans. Specifically, the Big Red is planning to launch a 5 gigabyte prepaid plan as well as a 10 gigabyte prepaid plan. Both plans will be made available beginning on November 13th, with prices at $50 and $70, respectively. The new plans typically share the same inclusions as Verizon’s existing prepaid plans, with the 10 gigabyte prepaid plan coming with unlimited voice calls to Canada and Mexico.
The latest prepaid plans from Verizon Wireless should be welcome additions to the mobile operator’s current options, which already include a $60 a month plan that offers 6 gigabytes of data, and a $45 a month plan that features 3 gigabytes of data. The biggest wireless carrier in the United States also has a Wi-Fi only option that costs $30 a month. The Big Red also allows mobile users to use a range of different devices on its prepaid plans, provided that these handsets are compatible with Verizon’s network.
Interestingly, Verizon Wireless discontinued a couple of prepaid plans barely a week ago. It was reported that the Big Red was shutting down its $30 a month prepaid plan that came with unlimited domestic voice call minutes and text messaging, as well as unlimited text messaging to Canada and Mexico (but not unlimited data). The other prepaid plan cut by the major US wireless carrier was its $15 a month option, which featured unlimited web browsing, plus 300 voice call minutes or text messages.
It is no secret that the prepaid market has become increasingly competitive in the last year or so. More and more mobile users are availing of prepaid plans over postpaid options for a number of reasons. Chief among them is the flexibility granted by prepaid, especially in allowing customers to change plans when needed, or maybe even jump to another prepaid mobile operator if it suits their preferences.
Also back then, mobile users had to purchase a handset outright to use on a prepaid plan. But lately, mobile operators are starting to offer device financing, which meant that the customer will not have to sign a contract with the carrier, although he will have to pay off his device before he can terminate his service with that particular service provider.
