According to BayStreet Research, Virgin Mobile, the newly relaunched prepaid arm of major US wireless carrier Sprint, could sell between 100,000 to 300,000 units of Apple’s iPhone devices by way of Virgin’s new Inner Circle unlimited plan. For those not familiar with Inner Circle, it is a plan that offers budget friendly iPhone models paired with one year of unlimited service, free of charge, to customers who are willing to avail of the plan online.
100,000 to 300,000 units may be a lot, but BayStreet Research is quick to point out that this tally is ultimately still a minute number compared to the estimated 12 million iPhone devices that Apple ships in the United States mobile market in any given three month period. Still, Virgin Mobile currently sells about a hundred thousand units of mobile devices on a monthly basis by way of its many online channels. That volume represents 30 percent of its gross sales every quarter. With the new Inner Circle unlimited plan starting to gain some momentum, Virgin Mobile could end up posting sales of up to 300,000 devices until the end of the promotional deal’s period (for the record, the special offer is good until July 31st).
About a couple of weeks ago, Sprint had relaunched Virgin Mobile as a mobile operator that sells only iPhone devices. As part of the rebranding effort, Virgin Mobile is offering one year of unlimited data for $1 to customers who purchase an iPhone and then port their phone number to the new Inner Circle plan by the end of this month, or to existing customers of Virgin Mobile who decide to upgrade to an iPhone device.
The $1 one year unlimited data special offer is made available only via the official website of Virgin Mobile, as well as at Apple’s retail outlets. Pricing for iPhone devices starts at $279 for the iPhone SE and maxes out at $770 for last year’s iPhone 7 Plus. When the first year of service is finished, the unlimited offering will revert to the standard $50 per month pricing. Many view Sprint’s relaunch of the Virgin Mobile brand as a clear effort to reinvigorate its prepaid business. As recently as the last quarter, the fourth biggest wireless carrier in the United States happened to have gained 180,000 prepaid customers, registering some growth for the first time in a period of a couple of years.
