Well, it is a bit complicated. When Sprint relaunched Virgin Mobile back in June earlier this year, the fourth biggest mobile operator in America had positioned the prepaid brand as an iPhone only carrier. It turned out that Virgin had landed a deal with Apple to sell only iPhone devices through a new wireless plan called Inner Circle, offering unlimited gigabytes of data for $50 each month. In debuting the Inner Circle option, Virgin also introduced a special offer that grants one whole year of unlimited service for just $1 to customers who decide to activate their own iPhone handset and port their current phone number to the Inner Circle plan. Originally meant to run until the end of July, this promotional deal has since been extended throughout August.
But apparently, Virgin Mobile is no longer a strictly iPhone-only carrier, at least for now. As reported by Wave7 Research (by way of Fierce Wireless), it seems that Android powered mobile devices are starting to get sold at the mobile operator’s official website. Moreover, Motorola’s Moto E4 was also spotted in the company’s online inventory.
So what is going on? Well, as explained by Justin Scott, a spokesperson for Virgin Mobile, the carrier has received feedback from existing customers who own Android powered handsets, especially with regards to how they might be able to upgrade their Android device in the future, given that Virgin has now been transformed into an iPhone only carrier.
Scott further pointed out how Virgin Mobile is collaborating with fellow Sprint prepaid arm Boost Mobile in offering competitive wireless plans for Virgin’s Android users who are looking to buy a new device in the future. Virgin no longer plans to sell Android devices through its official website by fall of next year, and right now it is exploring ways in which it can still serve its Android customers who are thinking of upgrading their current handset.
It bears noting that Android devices generally have lower pricing as compared to Apple smartphones. At Virgin Mobile, the only iPhone model sold at less than two hundred bucks online is the iPhone SE, which fetches for $160. Because most of Apple’s handsets are premier flagship devices anyway, they tend to be expensive. It goes without saying that not all prepaid mobile customers can afford this rather high price range. Naturally, they would want to check if there Android options, which are often more affordable.
