The future must truly be upon us when a WiFi radio can be squeezed into that tiny SIM card that you'd slip into the back of your GSM cell phone. SIMFi, brainchild of a marriage between Sagem Orga and Telefonica, is a SIM card with integrated WiFi that can turn any old cell phone into a mobile WiFi hotspot.
SIMFi will offer similar 3G connection-sharing goodness as seen on the MiFi and Palm Pre/Pixi. After setting up the SIMFi device (network name, security settings, etc.), you'll presumably be able to pop the device into any 3G phone and voila, an instant access point.
Harnessing a mobile hotspot for your army of WiFi-equipped devices without having to have a separate device or hotspot-ready phone certainly sounds appealing, if not revolutionary. If the technology makes it to US markets, it will be interesting to see if carriers will embrace it -- and just how much they'll charge on a monthly basis to outfit your current phone with the joys of mobile WiFi.
