Will.i.am, rap artist and prominent member of the hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas, will be releasing his own smartwatch. Yes, you read that right. As reported by The Telegraph, the musician is planning to announce the Will.i.am smartwatch in San Francisco this coming Thursday, October 16th. Incidentally, Apple will also be having a press event on that same date, and the tech giant is widely expected to introduce new products on that day.
First things first -- why on Earth is a recording artist releasing a wearable device? Well, it turns out Will.i.am has been partnering with digital music and radio platform 7digital in order to license songs and recordings from major record labels. The plan is to have the wearable device, the Will.i.am smartwatch, play the music licensed by 7digital as well as run apps. Ever since news of 7digital's partnership with Will.i.am broke out, the share price of the UK-based music company has increased by more than 77 percent.
Unlike other wearable devices out there (especially those that run on Android), the Will.i.am smartwatch will not need to be connected to a smartphone. The wearable device will instead utilize wireless Internet and Bluetooth technology to play songs and launch apps.
The Will.i.am smartwatch is rumored to have a sleek, curved screen. Users will be delighted to know that the wearable device will be able to run the usual social media apps such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. No details are available yet as of this writing, but sources are stating that the Will.i.am smartwatch will likely run on an Android mobile operating system.
It might surprise people to know that this is not the musician's first attempt in venturing into the mobile tech industry. Will.i.am actually holds the title of "director of creative innovation" at Intel. The rap artist also launched i.am+foto.sosho, his own line of premium accessories for iPhone devices.
As of now, the Will.i.am smartwatch has no official product name yet. But the rapper has not been shy in giving the public a few glimpses of the device. As a matter of fact, he has provided sneak peeks of the smartwatch during his stints in The Voice UK Edition and as one of the guests of the Alan Carr late night show.
It is difficult to say if the Will.i.am smartwatch will be able to trump the Apple Watch or Samsung Gear. But the wearable device certainly has built-in star power, and even if it does not conquer the tech industry, it should make some waves.
