Recently this week, Comcast’s wireless service, Xfinity Mobile, has announced that BYOD (bring your own device) customers can now activate their unlocked iPhones (albeit select models only -- they can check by heading to this page) on the MVNO’s network by visiting any Xfinity Store location in the United States. Moreover, those users that happen to own handsets that are not eligible can still have their device swapped for a gift card that is worth the value of their smartphone. And ever they decide to upgrade to a new model later on, they can make full use of that gift card to enjoy savings on the new device’s cost.
The introduction of in-store BYOD on Xfinity Mobile may not be a total surprise. Back in August of last year, Randall Hounsell, the vice president of product and marketing at Xfinity Mobile, had stated that a BYOD program was already in the works, along with a trade in program.
As explained by Rui Costa, the vice president of product management and customer experience at Xfinity Mobile, the launch of BYOD should give iPhone users everywhere an excellent opportunity to continue using their devices while shifting to the MVNO’s service and take advantage of the perks of doing so, like enjoying access to 4G LTE as well as 18 million Wi-Fi hotspots.
For those interested in availing of the in-store BYOD deal, they should know that they can select any one of two data options -- paying for each gigabyte at a price of $12 per gigabyte across all lines of service under their account, or opting for the unlimited option, which costs $45 each month for every line. On top of that, customers who also have Xfinity TV get to access more than 200 live TV channels, 40K On Demand films and TV programs, and cloud DVR.
As mentioned earlier in this post, the BYOD arrangement for now only applies to a limited number of smartphone makes and models. But Xfinity Mobile is promising to keep adding new handsets to its list of eligible devices, which means that in the next few months, the range of qualified models should continue to grow.
For those still not familiar with Xfinity Mobile, Comcast had launched the wireless service just before the start of last year’s summer season. The cable giant had leveraged the MVNO agreement it had struck with Verizon Wireless half a decade earlier. Xfinity Mobile is currently made available to all of Comcast’s Xfinity Internet subscribers, and the service offers up to five lines of service that feature domestic voice call minutes and text messaging, zero line access fees whatsoever, and a hundred megabytes of shared data.
