Simultaneous with Samsungintroducing its two newest smartphones, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+, Xiaomi is also launching a couple of its latest phablet offerings -- the Redmi Note 2 priced at $125, and the Redmi Note 2 Prime which costs $155. Some may be quick to notice the really friendly prices of Xiaomi’s new devices, and in terms of pricing, the Chinese phone maker’s handsets have the advantage over Samsung’s new Galaxy devices. It is a good thing for Samsung that Xiaomi has not quite penetrated the United States smartphone market yet, but in the next year or two, Samsung may find itself with a new competitor.
As for Xiaomi, it is clear that the China based smartphone vendor is not contented with its success in its home country, and is looking to expand to other big smartphone markets. Some industry watchers are already considering Xiaomi as the third biggest seller of smartphones in the world, and if it can manage to build a stronger presence in Western countries, it just might give Samsung a run for its money.
The Redmi Note 2 and the Redmi Note 2 Prime will start selling online in China on August 16th of this year, and they will be made available in black, white, and a range of pastel colors. As for the specifications, both phablets feature a 5.5 inch full HD display screen, complemented with a 13 megapixel camera on the rear side and a 5 megapixel camera on the front side.
Hardware specs wise, the Redmi Note 2 comes equipped with a 2.0 GigaHertz MediaTek Helio X10 chip, supported by 2 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 16 gigabytes of internal memory. As for the Redmi Note 2 Prime, it sports a 2.2 GigaHertz process, with 2 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of built in storage. Both devices feature a 3,060 mAh battery, and also have a micro SD card slot for storage expansion.
Apart from unveiling two new phablets, Xiaomi also took the opportunity to introduce an update to its Android skin, highlighting its upcoming MIUI 7 update, which is scheduled for launch worldwide on August 19th of this year. According to the Chinese phone maker, the update will bring enhanced performance and battery optimizing tweaks, plus expanding the personalization tools made available to mobile users with various ultra-colorful themes. Xiaomi further added that the Redmi Note 2 and the Redmi Note 2 Prime will ship with MIUI 6, but will updated with the new MIUI 7 at a later date.
