The Essential Phone can now be purchased from Sprint outlets across the United States. Soon after the device was first unveiled by Andy Rubin’s startup firm Essential Products back in May earlier this year, Sprint had acquired the exclusive carrier rights to sell the handset (at least in America; in Canada, that honor goes to Telus). Sprint is selling the Essential Phone for $14.58 per month, with zero down payment, over a period of 18 months. Those looking to take advantage of this deal will be delighted to know that at this monthly price, they are effectively enjoying a discount of about $260, which is around half off the device’s original cost. On top of that, Sprint is also offering Essential’s 360 degree camera for $200, which is equivalent to $16.67 over a period of a year on the carrier’s installment option.
Rubin may go down in history as the godfather of Android, but his Essential Phone will have its work cut out for it this fall and when the busy holiday shopping season arrives in a few months. Competition in the smartphone industry has always been ruthless, but this year, it appears that it is heating up to never before seen levels. Samsung, after all, has just introduced its latest flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 8, not to mention the Galaxy S8 devices it had launched earlier this year. Another South Korean phone maker, LG, has also debuted its LG V30 offering, apart from its other flagship, the LG G6, also released in 2017. Of course, one also has to take into account how Apple’s new iPhones (the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus) will make the field even more competitive. And Google has not even unveiled its Pixel follow up yet.
Still, some industry watchers believe that the Essential Phone can hold its own against the offerings of the established giants of the industry. It also helps that the device comes with a more affordable price, at least when compared to the Galaxy Note 8 or the iPhone X. It is also worth mentioning that the handset has support for three channel aggregation, which should allow for peak download speeds of over 200 mbps. Sprint’s spectrum may also be ideal for the Essential Phone, especially in terms of the device performing really well on Sprint’s network in delivering streamed media, file downloading and uploading, and accessing cloud based data.
