Need further proof that more and more users are going into mobile live streaming nowadays? Well, YouTube’s app has risen to the top of the App Store charts just a few days after it decided to drop its mobile live streaming requirement down to just a thousand subscribers. Before, the mobile live streaming feature on the app was only made available to users with at least 10,000 subscribers. But now that the world’s most popular source of video content has reduced that requirement to a tenth of its former quantity, the demand for the YouTube main app has increased significantly. Interestingly, YouTube had not made an official announcement regarding the change in mobile live streaming requirements. But after news of the change hit headlines this week, the company has since confirmed it, and the response from consumers was certainly quick.
According to information released by Sensor Tower, the iOS version of YouTube’s app quickly shot up to the top of the App Store. It bears noting that the last time the app had reached number one was back in December of 2015. Yesterday, it had reached the top anew before sliding down slightly to number two as of this writing.
On Google Play, however, the YouTube app is not as successful as compared to the App Store. As a video player, the app is ranked second, but in the overall app category, it sits at a rather far number 210 spot. Still, it is good to remember that YouTube happens to be preloaded in most Android powered mobile devices, while on handsets that run on the iOS mobile operating system, it had to be downloaded separately.
Apart from Sensor Tower, App Annie has also noticed the improvement in the ranking of YouTube’s app. As a matter of fact, App Annie’s data also shows that the app has also reached number one in terms of the Overall iPhone downloads -- something that YouTube has not accomplished since Christmas of 2015.
To YouTube’s credit, it has remained a top iOS app since like forever -- managing to stay in the top ten for most of the last year. Getting to the number one spot, however, is a different undertaking altogether, and the app has done it by generating a sizable increase in the volume of downloads in less than a week’s time. Also, overtaking popular apps like Ballz, Messenger, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Blackbox, Bitmoji (by Snapchat), Google Maps, and Netflix is certainly no walk in the park.
