For the past few years, virtual reality has become a big thing, especially with smartphones adapting to this technology. One of the best ways you can experience VR is through Google's Daydream platform. There is, however, a catch. Only a limited number of devices are compatible with the VR platform, namely the Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Motorola’s Moto Z, Huawei’s Mate 9 Pro, and Asus’ ZenFone AR -- which all cost over $600. Not to mention, you would still have to shell out another $79 to purchase the Daydream View VR headset.
Thankfully, ZTE is coming out with a new software update to last year's Axon 7 smartphone. Delivering the news on Tuesday, ZTE has announced that the Axon 7 will be Daydream ready through a software update with Google’s Android 7.0 Nougat mobile operating system. The official release date of the software update has been delayed because of some quality standards but it is definitely coming in the near future. With this midrange smartphone, you can already enjoy access to VR content that will definitely give you an enjoyable time.
As for the specs of the device, the Axon 7 is equipped with a 5.5 inch AMOLED display screen with a resolution of 1,440 by 2,560 pixels and a 534 pixel per inch (ppi) density. Beneath the surface, there is a 2.15 GigaHertz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor running with 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM). Storage wise, the Axon 7 comes with a built in capacity of 64 gigabytes with a micro SD card slot for up to 128 gigabytes memory expansion. The phone also comes with a 20 megapixel rear facing camera with support for 4K video recording and an 8 megapixel front facing camera. As for the battery, the Axon 7 has a 3,250 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery that on paper, should last up to 24 hours of talk time and 12 days on standby mode. Other notable features included in the Axon 7 is a fingerprint scanner, support for near field communications (NFC), and its dual SIM card trays. Upon release, it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with MiFavor 4.0 UI on top.
If you are tempted to upgrade your device to one that is Daydream ready, the Axon 7 may just be the right phone for you. Compared with the Google Pixel and the Moto Z, it will not cost you a lot of money to be able to view VR content on a device. Apart from the upcoming support for Daydream, the Axon 7 has been said to rock a pretty solid battery.
And if you are ready to purchase the ZTE Axon 7 or you already own one, you can still take advantage of the Daydream headset sale Google is currently running until February 25th. Instead of paying $79 for the VR headset, you only need to pay $49. That is already quite a steal if you want to have a VR ready device such as the Axon 7.
