Operating System: Sprint has had a good run with its Hero Android phone, made by HTC, but it's starting to get a little long in the tooth. In the next few days, Sprint will launch the Samsung Transform, a new smartphone that runs Android 2.1 with an upgrade to Android 2.2 in the near future.
Design: Similar in design to Samsung's Galaxy S series of phones, the Transform will have a 3.5-inch LCD screen, slide-out keyboard, 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera (and a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera for conferencing applications), 800-MHz processor, WiFi, Bluetooth and a microSD memory card slot. The Transform will not use Samsung's "TouchWiz" interface that overlays Android, although Sprint will offer "Sprint ID Packs" that allow users to easily customize - or "Transform" - their screens. Sprint ID allows Samsung Transform users to quickly download ID packs that deliver a predefined experience, including applications, widgets, ringtones and wallpapers.
Camera:The Transform connects to the world on Sprint's EVDO Rev A network and, once the phone is upgraded to Android 2.2, it can be used as a WiFi hotspot for up to five devices. The launch date for the Sprint Transform is Oct. 10, 2010.
Android 2.1 (upgradable to Android 2.2 later this year)
