Do not count BlackBerry out just yet. The once dominant but now struggling smartphone maker has announced that it has posted profits during the recently concluded quarter. It is now twice in a row that BlackBerry has managed a profitable quarter, thanks to an extensive cost cutting effort.
BlackBerry's fiscal fourth ends at February 28th. For the three month period leading up to that date, BlackBerry posted earnings excluding certain items of $0.04 a share. Wall Street had previously predicted that the phone maker would post a lot of $0.04 a share. Also, BlackBerry's shares increased 3.2 percent to $9.60 in premarket trading Friday. BlackBerry posted a profit in the amount of $28 million. A year earlier, the company sustained a massive loss amounting to $423 million.
For all Verizon Wireless customers who like their smartphones to have some bit of old-school charm, they may be happy to know that the BlackBerry Classic will become available on the Big Red's online store starting February 26th of this year.
The carrier will be selling the BlackBerry Classic for $100 with the standard two-year agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate. Those who want to see the device at the nearest Verizon Wireless store in their area will have to exercise some patience -- the handset is scheduled to hit shelves on March 5th.
BlackBerry Classic, the newest smartphone offering from BlackBerry, was officially launched recently during an event in New York City. As its name implies, the BlackBerry Classic is decidedly old-school, at least in terms of appearance.
As a matter of fact, it is the first BlackBerry handset released in three years that actually looks like your standard BlackBerry. Which means that it features a QWERTY keyboard replete with physical navigation keys, plus a touch trackpad.
