The new generation Pixel devices are widely expected to be officially introduced by Google this coming Wednesday, October 4th, and mobile tech enthusiasts are no doubt excited to see how the follow ups will improve upon last year’s models. Plenty has already been discussed with regards to leaked images that surfaced in the interwebs nearly a couple of weeks ago, and we will all find out in two days if those leaks were indeed true. Still, it is worth going through the persistent rumors.
What we know (almost for sure) is that on October 4th, Google is very, very likely to unveil new generation Pixel devices, which should neatly expand upon the Pixel and the Pixel XL released last year. Google has appeared to have launched a marketing campaign, by way of a landing page with the text “Thinking about changing phones? Stay tuned for more on October 4.” Obviously, Google would not want to reveal everything until the official unveiling event.
When it comes to virtual reality (VR) headsets for its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus devices, Samsung itself already has a pretty decent offering with its Gear VR, even more so when taking into account the hordes of mobile apps and Oculus, as well as a new controller, that are compatible with the headset.
For the past few years, virtual reality has become a big thing, especially with smartphones adapting to this technology. One of the best ways you can experience VR is through Google's Daydream platform. There is, however, a catch. Only a limited number of devices are compatible with the VR platform, namely the Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Motorola’s Moto Z, Huawei’s Mate 9 Pro, and Asus’ ZenFone AR -- which all cost over $600.
It is a known fact that Verizon Wireless is the only major mobile operator in the United States that is selling Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL devices. But because of some delays in the shipping of smartphones (due to high demand), some subscribers of the Big Red now find their purchases pushed back by weeks or even months.
Via its official blog, Google has revealed the release date of its Daydream View virtual reality headset, and it will be this coming November 10th. The Daydream View VR headset will debut not only online in the Google Store, but also by way of various retail outlets in major mobile markets such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. There may be some variation when it comes to the exact pricing, and retail stores may vary depending on which country, but they generally include Verizon Wireless and Best Buy in the US, while in Canada and the UK, it will be Best Buy and Carphone Warehouse, respectively.
Along with the newPixel and Pixel XL smartphones, Google also took the opportunity to introduce a new virtual reality headset, the Daydream View, and it has a rather unique design -- its goggles are covered in fabric, which as explained by Clay Bavor, who heads VR projects at Google, is a direct result of working with clothing makers in designing the headset.
