According to new information from Canalys, it appears that the Apple Watch has surpassed the record previously set by Fitbit, in terms of the total volume of shipments in a single quarter for a wearable device. Back in the holiday season of 2015, Fitbit had shipped 6.1 million units in a three month period. Exactly a couple of years later, Apple’s smartwatch offering has since bettered Fitbit’s record by shipping 8 million units during the final quarter of 2017.
Just this week, Fitbit has announced through its official blog that it is extending support for Pebble services only until the end of June this year. Fitbit had originally planned to end Pebble support until the end of last year, but has since decided to extend the deadline for an additional six months.
Although the wearables market has been noticeably having a hard time in the United States mobile market, it is actually doing okay across the globe. As a matter of fact, the latest report from Canalys indicates that wearables are showing an 8 percent improvement year over year. Sure, that 8 percent growth may not be jaw dropping, but it is growth nonetheless.
According to a report recently published by Apple Insider, it seems that a number of familiar apps have been removed from the Apple Watch, including Google Maps, Amazon, eBay, and Target, just to name a few. Because Apple has not confirmed anything yet, nobody knows for sure yet just when these apps were removed. As for Google, it did verify that it had indeed removed support from Google Maps, although the tech giant hinted that it might be for a temporary basis only.
According to a new report recently published by IDC, it appears that the market for wearable devices worldwide is alive and kicking. The research firm stated that the volume of shipments of smartwatch devices and fitness trackers have reached 33.9 million units during the final quarter of last year, which is not only a new all time high but also signifies a growth of 16.9 percent year over year. As for the volume of shipments for the whole year, that increased 25 percent to 102.4 million units.
Among today’s wearable devices, fitness trackers are still the undisputed best sellers, but smartwatch devices are beginning to catch on. According to market research firm NPD, activity trackers are still more widely used compared to smartwatches across most categories related to fitness, especially among owners of wearable devices who work out. NPD’s data also shows that those who use fitness trackers are generally more active -- 79 percent of fitness tracker owners exercise on a regular basis, while 66 percent of smartwatch owners hit the gym.
It appears that 2015 was both a good year and a bad year for Fitbit. The company finished last year as (still) the king of the wearables industry, but it saw its market share continue to decrease. According to market research firm IDC, the shipment volume of Fitbit’s widely popular activity tracker devices increased to 21 million units in 2015, a significant improvement compared to the 11 million units it registered the year before.
Research firm IDC has just published its latest sales figures for wearable devices, and it appears that familiar names continue to lead in terms of sales volume and market share. The year 2015 saw the release of the highly touted Apple Watch, as well as interesting offerings from players like Tag Heuer which ventured into smartwatch territory for the first time. Still overall, the sales of wearable devices this year rose 200 percent in the last three months as compared to the same period one year ago, with total shipments of wearables reaching the 21 million mark.

The Apple Watch may hold the title of being the most popular smartwatch existing today (it certainly is the most visible, being an Apple product and all), but unbeknownst to many, it is actually not the market leader when it comes to wearable devices. As a matter of fact, that honor goes to Fitbit.
