A little more than a week ago, Apple had admitted that it was intentionally slowing down older iPhone models. According to the tech giant, it was doing so in order to prevent battery problems (and potentially worse issues later on). By slowing down earlier models, the company was basically keeping them from shutting down randomly, especially when they are not sufficiently charged, or used in lower temperatures.
According to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, an improved TrueDepth camera system will cause Apple to put ever bigger capacity batteries in future iPhone models. In a research note, Kuo explained that the bigger batteries will likely debut a couple of years from now, as reported by Mac Rumors.
T-Mobile is now offering Apple’s iPhone X with a rather generous $300 discount. In order to avail of the discount however, customers will have to trade in an eligible iPhone model and buy the iPhone X via the wireless carrier’s Equipment Installment Plan.
Apple has decided to come clean with it -- it really is slowing down the processing performance of older iPhones (as previously suspected by Redditors and Geekbench), but the tech giant is doing it to prevent more (and potentially worse) battery problems down the road. In an official statement made available to TechCrunch, the company admitted that it had rolled out a software patch a year ago that causes old iPhone units to operate more slowly.
According to a recent blog post on Geekbench’s official website, iPhone devices do exhibit some decrease in performance over time, and it is mainly due to their battery getting older. John Poole, the president and founder of Primate Labs (the firm who developed the Geekbench processor benchmarking software), explained that as the batteries age and show reduced power capacity, the processors on iPhones are also expected to slow down. We tend to believe that our iPhones will always be capable of fast processing, even after many years of use.
When Apple had first made its iPhone X available for preordering back in October earlier this year, the device’s ship times had immediately extended to about five weeks or so. But it appears that shipping estimates have shortened significantly, with the tech giant’s US Apple Store website indicating free next day delivery, or even same day pick up. It should be noted, too, that the free next day delivery goes for all in-stock units that are bought before 3 PM local time this Friday, December 22nd.
Every year’s end, the world’s most popular search engine publishes its annual Year in Search report, which basically shows which topics and stuff Earthlings most often Google in their waking hours. The most searched term is literally a force of nature in itself, Hurricane Irma, which is considered by many as the strongest Atlantic Ocean storm in a dozen years (specifically, since Hurricane Wilma in 2005).
As it has done in the past, Flickr is ending this year by releasing its report on the most popular cameras being used by consumers today. Based on the information it has gathered, the image hosting services provider has declared the iPhone as the most widely used camera, with 54 percent of photographers taking full advantage of Apple’s smartphone in capturing images. Quite impressively, that percentage exceeds all the other camera brands combined.
Just about every mobile user within the last decade has been asking for a smartphone battery that can offer extended battery life. Could 2018 be the year in which we finally get a battery that can keep up with our increasingly handset dependent and data hungry lifestyles? This largely remains to be seen, but if it is Apple getting in on the action, that should be pretty exciting news in itself, right?
