AT&T will be increasing the monthly data allotments on its GoPhone plans starting Friday, February 20th. On top of that, the major wireless carrier will also be adding calls to Mexico free of charge.
GoPhone plan's data bucket currently offers 1 gigabyte per month. But in a couple of days, AT&T will be boosting the data allotment to 1.5 gigabytes per month. As for the $60 plan, what used to be 2.5 gigabytes will grow to 4 gigabytes starting this Friday.
Moreover, customers under AT&T's GoPhone plans already enjoy unlimited text messaging to Mexico as well as to other countries. But beginning this coming weekend, subscribers under the $60 plan will get to have unlimited calls to any landline and mobile phone number in Mexico, too.
When AT&T acquired Mexican carrier Iusacell last January earlier this year, it promised that it would build the first wireless service network that would service both the United States and Mexico. Now, AT&T continues to make good with that promise by announcing that Cricket Wireless, its prepaid brand, will start making unlimited calls to Mexico available as parts of its standard $50 and $60 plans.
Apparently, buying one Mexican wireless carrier is not enough for AT&T. It seems that the American telecoms company is eyeing to buy another one too. As a matter of fact, AT&T announced just recently that it intends to acquire Nextel Mexico, yet another Mexican carrier and competitor to Iusacell, for a $1.875 billion amount. AT&T is working on finalizing the deal with NII Holdings and laying the groundwork so that Nextel Mexico's operations can be merge with AT&T's expanding pan-American network.
It is now official. Major American wireless carrier AT&T has acquired Mexican wireless carrier Iusacell for $2.5 billion. With this acquisition, AT&T is now the first mobile carrier in the United States to operate wireless networks on both sides of the US-Mexican border.
Because Iusacell only has 9.2 million subscribers (which places it third among Mexican wireless carriers), AT&T will not be getting that much additional customers to its fold. But the American carrier does get access to Iusacell's GSM and CDMA network, which to date covers 120 million wireless users.
