Twitter has recently revealed that it is joining forces with Live Nation in order to start exclusively live streaming video of concert events. The social media giant is reportedly already lining up a formidable lineup of recording artists, including Train, Portugal The Man, August Alsina, and Marian Hill. This coming May 13th, Zac Brown Band is said to be scheduled to air a live musical performance.
According to the most popular social media platform around the world, one out of five videos shared on its network are now Live videos. And as pointed out by Fidji Simo, the head of video at Facebook, the Live broadcasting watch time on a daily basis has increased four fold in the past twelve months.
Facebook may not have beaten YouTube to deploying 4K 360 live streaming, but it did get the jump on Twitter’s Periscope. This week, the biggest social media platform in the planet officially launched initial support for 360 degree live streams. National Geographic’s Facebook page will be the first to publish 360 Live video content this week as a bunch of researchers emerge from nearly three months of isolation in pods at the Mars Desert Research Station located in the state of Utah. Nat Geo’s stream will include interviews with the participating scientists as well as footage from the mock Mars landscape.
Yahoo has officially done it -- announcing its Livetext messaging app to the world. Livetext is a brand messaging app that allows mobile users to chat with their friends via text conversations and videos, but without audio.
Almost a couple of weeks ago, the Livetext messaging app was spotted in Apple’s Hong Kong App Store. At the time of the sighting, Yahoo had refrained from confirming or denying the existence of the app, stating only that it was always in the process of exploring new product experiences for its users.
Users of GoPros will now be allowed to stream live videos from their action cameras. This piece of news was revealed by Meerkat just recently during this year’s VidCon online video convention held at the city of Anaheim in Orange County, California.
Periscope, the live video streaming app developed by Twitter, has finally been made available on the Android mobile operating system. The social media giant debuted its Periscope mobile app on the iOS platform early this year, and now it is doing the same to the Android platform. It has been a rather significant wait, but through the efforts of Sara Haider (formerly of Twitter for Android, who now heads the company's Android app development projects), the app can now be used by Android users everywhere.
While its rival Periscope was busy celebrating the fact that many viewers of the much-hyped Mayweather-Pacquiao fight chose to watch the match on Periscope instead of on HBO or Showtime, Meerkat continues to add enhancements to its mobile app. And this time around, the latest update could allow Meerkat to break out from its dependence on Twitter (which owns Periscope).
The Meerkat live video streaming mobile app has beaten Twitter's own Periscope in penetrating the iOS market. Now, it is doing it again but on the Android platform (supporting version Android 4.2). The Periscope app now has a lot of catching up to do.
The Meerkat mobile app for Android may have been labeled as a “beta” version (similar to an earlier version that was only made available to a very limited number of invited users) but it appears to have no restrictions when it comes to device options. Moreover, the list of core features seem to be complete, at least when compared to the Meerkat mobile app for iOS.
