RootMetrics conducted loads of field tests during the second half of last year, and then fashioned a list of the cities in the United States with the best mobile networks. Intriguingly, the two largest metros in America -- New York City and Los Angeles -- continue to fare less impressively than a number of smaller cities in terms of overall quality in cellular coverage. Home to some 18 million residents, the Big Apple is ranked just 66th in RootMetrics’ latest rankings, which included a total of 125 metropolitan areas across the country. As for Los Angeles (population of more than 12 million people), it ranked just 49th.
It appears that T-Mobile wants its mobile users to further boost their cellular coverage, especially in indoor settings such as at home or in the office. The third biggest wireless carrier in the United States announced just recently that it will soon be offering the T-Mobile 4G LTE CellSpot, a low power wireless radio device that is capable of supplying 3G and 4G cellular coverage in indoor locations. T-Mobile is offering its 4G LTE CellSpot to subscribers of the wireless carrier’s Simple Choice plans.
T-Mobile may still only be the third biggest wireless carrier in the United States, but it is gaining on industry leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T in terms of its 4G LTE coverage. Just this week, top executives of T-Mobile stated that the company’s 4G LTE service has now been made available to over 300 million mobile users all over the US. That number is around the same coverage as Verizon’s and AT&T’s high speed networks. On top of that, T-Mobile has also revealed that it is on its way to posting 1 million additional square miles of LTE coverage to its existing network infrastructure.
When it comes to high speed wireless technology LTE, more commonly known as 4G, the United States ranks in 14th place. That is, among the slowest -- yikes. As for the country with the fastest 4G LTE connection, in terms of both connection speed and quality of coverage, the honor goes to South Korea. This is, of course, according to a report published by OpenSignal, a mobile app that maps out mobile coverage all over the world. In making its report, OpenSignal collected information from more than 325,000 users of its mobile app, from the months of June and August of this year.
Sprint may have been recently overtaken by T-Mobile in terms of the number of new net customer additions. But at least Sprint can claim that it is better than its close rival in one aspect -- overall quality and of network coverage, at least according to the results of RootMetrics’ latest survey.
RootMetrics is a company that regularly evaluates how good wireless carriers in the United States are with their mobile coverage. From time to time, the wireless testing firm examines data coverage in airports across the country, and tries to determine which wireless carrier provides the best data coverage.
