During this year’s VidCon (an event focusing on the online video market) held in the city of Anaheim, California, YouTube took the opportunity to reveal that it has added a live streaming feature to its mobile app. It appears that live streaming features have become the rage right now, with Facebook touting its Live feature while Twitter has its Periscope, and YouTube would do well to join in on the program.
While Periscope and Meerkat are busy battling each other, a new live streaming app has arrived in town. Recently just launched, this new app is called Mirrativ (combining the words mirror and narrative), and it basically allows users to broadcast whatever is happening on the display screen of their smartphone or tablet.
Users of GoPros will now be allowed to stream live videos from their action cameras. This piece of news was revealed by Meerkat just recently during this year’s VidCon online video convention held at the city of Anaheim in Orange County, California.
Periscope, the live video streaming app developed by Twitter, has finally been made available on the Android mobile operating system. The social media giant debuted its Periscope mobile app on the iOS platform early this year, and now it is doing the same to the Android platform. It has been a rather significant wait, but through the efforts of Sara Haider (formerly of Twitter for Android, who now heads the company's Android app development projects), the app can now be used by Android users everywhere.
While its rival Periscope was busy celebrating the fact that many viewers of the much-hyped Mayweather-Pacquiao fight chose to watch the match on Periscope instead of on HBO or Showtime, Meerkat continues to add enhancements to its mobile app. And this time around, the latest update could allow Meerkat to break out from its dependence on Twitter (which owns Periscope).
Floyd Mayweather was not the only victor last Saturday night. Well, at least to Dick Costolo, chief executive officer of Twitter. Shortly after the highly-anticipated Mayweather-Pacquiao ended, Costolo tweeted that Periscope was the true winner of the night.
The Meerkat live video streaming mobile app has beaten Twitter's own Periscope in penetrating the iOS market. Now, it is doing it again but on the Android platform (supporting version Android 4.2). The Periscope app now has a lot of catching up to do.
It looks like Twitter is going the extra mile in making sure that the live video streaming service it purchased, Periscope, will be favored by users over rival Meerkat. Reports have surfaced that the social media giant has been calling celebrities who use Meerkat to try and persuade them that Meerkat is no longer popular and that they should go for Periscope instead.
Maybe not, for now. But with the way live streaming apps like Periscope and Meerkat have been receiving attention lately, it might not be long before people of all ages share live stream videos via their mobile devices as easily as posting on Instagram or updating their Twitter.
