Joe Belfiore, the corporate vice president of Operating Systems Group at Microsoft, has recently posted a tweet saying that the software company is no longer looking to develop new major Windows Mobile offerings or even handsets for now. Having said that, Belfiore said that the company will still be providing support for its mobile operating system, including rolling out the latest security updates and fixes for bugs.
When Netflix began offering support for offline viewing for devices late last year, it only did so for handsets that are powered by the Android and iOS mobile operating systems. But this year, the company is now introducing the same feature to the Windows 10 platform, as first reported by MSPoweruser. But wait, there is a catch -- it can only be used on Windows 10 personal computers and tablet devices.
According to a report recently published by web analytics firm StatCounter, Google’s Android mobile operating system is now the most widely used OS in the information superhighway. StatCounter’s research shows that Android has now captured a bigger share than Windows in terms of web usage, marking the first time ever that Google’s OS had overtaken Microsoft’s offering.
The second biggest wireless carrier in America is currently working to restore FaceTime for subscribers of its GoPhone unlimited plan. AT&T, however, still has not revealed the cause of the disruption.
A week ago, the mobile operator had introduced a $60 per month unlimited data option for customers of its GoPhone brand, and the plan included voice calls, text messaging, and data, but connection speeds are throttled at 3 mbps. A number of GoPhone customers, however, have already noticed that their new plan does not have support for Apple’s video calling feature on AT&T’s network.
The HP Elite X3 smartphone now has an official release date, hitting store shelves on August 29th of this year. For those not familiar with this Windows powered device, it comes with a 6 inch WQHD display screen with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,440 pixels, flanked by a 16 megapixel camera on the rear side (with LED flash and auto focus) as well as an 8 megapixel camera on the front side.
Microsoft has announced that it is planning to sell its feature phone division to a subsidiary entity belonging to Foxconn in a deal worth $350 million. Such a deal will also cause Nokia to make a long awaited return to releasing mobile phone products, something which it did really well almost a decade ago.
Word Flow, the impressive Windows Phone keyboard made by Microsoft, has officially come to the iOS mobile operating system. This new version optimized for iOS mobile users allows them to simply tap or swipe in order to type out letters, and intuitively guess the words to be typed when composing phrases or sentences, just like what the original version for the Windows Phone platform does. Microsoft had previously stated that the iOS version would have to undergo a certain beta testing period before transitioning to full deployment, but it appears that the mobile is now downloadable for free from the US App Store.
Good news for fans of Microsoft’s Surface series of tablet devices -- the company has decided to offer its Surface Pro 4 tablet with a generous discount of $100, with the discount applying to all five variants of the device. On top of that, the tech giant has also decided to sell its newest activity tracking wearable device, the Microsoft Band 2, at $50 off. Microsoft’s discounted prices for its Surface Pro 4 tablet and Microsoft Band 2 wearable device is good through February 27th and February 20th, respectively, of this year.
In December of last year, it was reported that Microsoft was delaying the Windows 10 Mobile update for older models of Lumia smartphones. But recent reports seem to indicate that the update is finally being prepped for deployment. As spotted by a Neowin reader, it appears that the software giant has already released an internal beta for the Mobile Upgrade Advisor for Windows 10.
Fans of Microsoft’s Windows 10 mobile operating system have been clamoring for a smartphone that would become the true face of the platform. But truth be told, the current available Windows 10 smartphones out there, most notably Microsoft’s own Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, as good as their specifications are, still leave some things to be desired. And it does not help that Microsoft seem to be reducing its efforts in promoting the flagship devices. For instance, during an event held in October of last year, the company appear to be putting more emphasis on its Surface Pro tablet and Surface Book laptop.
