Nokia takes capturing images and videos seriously with its line of Lumia phones, and I got my hands on the new Nokia Lumia Icon to see if it lives up to the Lumia reputation. I focused on a few key features of the Icon in order to get the best idea of its photo, audio, and video quality. Now, I’m going to fill you in on what I thought impressed me most about this phone after a few tests I ran with it.
The first thing that caught my attention with the Nokia Lumia Icon is its four individual microphones placed on the top and bottom of each side of the device. This unique placement of microphones allows for maximum audio quality, and throughout my tests I found the phones audio quality to be pretty impressive. Nokia claims that these microphones provide much better audio recording in loud environments like concerts, however I haven’t had the opportunity to test that out yet.
On the back of the Icon is its 20 megapixel camera and dual LED flash. I took this exceptionally large smartphone camera out for a spin and was very happy with the results. Beginning with just a simple photo, I found the color balance to be great and the image quality sharp. Often smartphones will oversaturate photos and will often produce warm or unrealistic looking photos. The Nokia Lumia Icon, on the other hand, produced a very realistic, balanced photo, and I couldn’t really find anything to complain about.
The next test I ran on the Icon was taking a video of a trolley passing to see how both the video and audio would respond to a loud, fast moving object. As the trolley passed I was happy with the stabilization of the video, and the camera was able to maintain clear focus as the trolley passed. As the trolley passed the audio was able to record clearly without peaking. When other phones face loud sounds like the trolley they often peak which causes a large distortion of the audio quality, fortunately the Nokia Lumia Icon was able to perform.
I took several other photos and videos to test the clarity of the images and its ability to focus and capture video in low light environments. Again, this phone impressed me with its quick focusing and smooth transitions between a bring environment to a low lit area while recording video. The powerful quad core processor in this phone allows for some incredibly fast processing of changing focus. Each and every photo or video I took continued to impress me with the incredible detail.
Watch my video review to see all of my test videos and photos so you can get an idea of the exceptional quality of the Nokia Lumia Icon’s photos and videos. My experience with the Nokia Lumia Icon was a good one and I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone looking for a powerful camera on their smartphone.
