DROID X vs. iPhone 4

Key Differences

  • Operating system: The DROID X is an Android-powered device featuring an enhanced version of Google’s standard Google Experience user interface .  The Android platform offers a number of differences, and depending on personal opinion, enhancements when compared to the iPhone OS — perhaps most notably superior customization options and the ability to add widgets.  Many users, however, prefer the simplicity and minimalism of the powerful iPhone OS.  The latest version of the iPhone OS also offers multitasking, although the multitasking capabilities as compared to Android (a seasoned multitasker) are still somewhat limited.  Android users will also be quick to remind you of other Android advantages such a free turn-by-turn GPS directions, voice-to-text, the ability to install any application you wish without being limited to only approved apps, and more.  Certainly, the differences are many (and beyond the scope of this comparison), and the choice between the two popular operating systems is one of personal preference.
  • Display: The Apple iPhone 4 is equipped with a super-high resolution 3.5-inch display “Retina Display” that provides an impressive  640 x 960 pixels.  The DROID X  has a significantly larger 4.3-inch display.  Despite its impressive size, however, the DROID X’s display is not as high-res as the iPhone 4′s, and offers substantially less pixels per square inch.
  • Design: Because of its large display, the DROID X is a fairly sizable device. Although the DROID X is still fairly pocketable, the iPhone 4 is a significantly more compact device that will fit easily in any pocket or purse.
  • Storage space: Right out of the box, the DROID X offers a total of 24GB of storage space (8GB on-board, pre-installed 16GB microSD card), while the while the Apple iPhone 4 has either 16GB or 32GB of on-board storage space (depending on model purchased) with no support for expandable memory such as a microSD card.
  • Camera: The iPhone 4 is equipped with a great 5-megapixel on-board camera with autofocus, bright LED flash, and the ability to record HD video at 720P.  The DROID X features an 8-megapixel camera with ultra-bright dual LED flash, as well as autofocus and the ability to record HD video at 720P.
  • Mobile hotspot: The DROID X is equipped with mobile hotspot capabilities, allowing up to 5 WiFi-enabled devices to share the device’s 3G internet connection. The iPhone 4 does not offer mobile hotspot capabilities.
  • HDMI out: The DROID X provides a micro HDMI out port, allowing users to connect the device to an HD-enabled television or projector to view video and photos.

No mention of the tiny “fuse” in the Droid X that will disable the device if a piece of software is loaded that the Droid does not like. Will turn it into a brick and must be repaired.
