HTC EVO Shift vs. EVO 4G Schmackdown!

Wirefly Learn » Android Phones

January 4th, 2011

The wireless industry has been speculating for weeks about a new phone from HTC, rumored to be called the “EVO Shift.” Today, the HTC EVO Shift is formally unveiled to the public, and Wirefly had a chance to compare the new EVO Shift with its older sibling, the EVO 4G. Both phones are on Sprint’s speedy 4G WiMax network, both are solidly built by HTC and both run the Android 2.2 operating system, but the two phones diverge significantly from that point. Which one claims the title of “fastest”? And which is the right EVO for you? Click on the video to the right to see a Wirefly Schmackdown pitting EVO vs. EVO.

Both versions of the HTC EVO are available from Wirefly. If the big screen, front-facing camera and blazing Internet speed of the HTC EVO 4G are to your liking, you can’t be blamed for thinking bigger is better. On the other hand, if you need a physical keyboard and the same speedy Internet connection in a compact package, the HTC EVO Shift is the natural choice. Either way, the latest evolution of the EVO product line is a worthy addition to Sprint’s family of Android phones.

Does the evo 4g have a slide out keyboard

    • Hi Jenna,
The EVO 4G does not have a slide out keyboard. Let me know if you have any other questions about these phones.

  • I got the iphone 4s and my mom wanted the same phone because instead of typing a text you could speak it. My dad ordered her the htc evo shift because it was free with a 2 year plan so I was wondering can you speak to text on that phone as well?

    • Nikki, yes, most Android phones (including the EVO Shift) will do voice-to-text, which you can use to dial phone numbers, do Internet searches and write texts and notes. When you are in texting mode, look for a little microphone symbol at the bottom of the onscreen keyboard. Touch that symbol and speak what you want to be in the text. It’s pretty easy, actually.

If you can’t figure it out, take your phone to a Sprint store and have someone there show you the technique.

    Thank you for the comparison.

  • how many times are people gonna ask about the shift and the front facing camera… 2 different gentlemen spoke that the shift does not have a front facing camera….read all posts before you ask questions.

hey which one is easier to text on? shift or evo? like with the phones that have the physical pull out text keyboard i can practically text without looking. but wouldthat be possibel orwhich one would be easier to text without looking? cuzright now i have the rant for sprint. and am debating on whether i should get the evo or the shift. so please help me and shoot me and email cuz i need to know. and only got until june 14ish to make up my mind.

    • I think the EVO Shift would be easier to text on, but you should visit a Sprint store and try it. Both are nice phones!

I’m confused about his statement regarding the memory. Though the shift comes with a smaller micro SD card (2GB versus 8GB) according to the specs that I read it has double the permanent memory (2GB for the shift and only 1GB for the original EVO). Which is right?

    • The shift has the 2gb with out the memory card andcan hold up 2 the
32gb memory card and the evo only has the 1gb phone memory but
comes with an 8gb memory card

  • battery life cannot reliably get you through the day. since getting the shift I have stocked my car and backpack with chargers. But they are cheap on Amazon.

  • Evo shift takes way better pictures than the Evo. But even the better shift takes only mediocre cell phone type pictures. Sound quality is better on the Evo.

Texting is easier on the Evo, despite the physical keyboard on the shift.

The Evo is quicker when flipping through programs and menu’s.

I don’t have a comparison, but the sound quality on the Shift, when using it as a mp3 player with headphones is crap. You can upgrade with MixZing, but still nothing like an ipod or a computer as far as sound quality. I haven’t tried an Evo on this front. The iphone takes great pics and sounds just like an ipod.

  • Is it official that the Evo Shift 4G does not have a front facing camera? We Know you made an annotation, but some other reviews have said the opposite. So yes or no?

  • which one u think is better

  • Does the evo 4g have a touch keyboard

    • Both these phones have on-screen keyboards. The HTC EVO Shift also has a physical sliding keyboard. Does that answer your question?

      • Hey i currently have the HTC evo shift and i was wondering how you get the light on the keybo
        ard to turn on. Thanks

        • Alex, I no longer have an HTC EVO Shift to check on the keyboard backlighting, so I recommend that you ask on HTC’s support forum for the EVO Shift. You can get to that forum by clicking here. Good luck!

  • Nice video, but I think the reviewer did a disservice by failing to state simply that the Shift has a second generation (ie, more efficient) Snapdragon processor, which is why the performance is faster at a lower clock speed. Would avoid confusing non-techies.

He also fails to mention, even in passing, something very critical to Android users: a battery life comparison.

  • By Adobe flash doee that mean the original evo doesn’t show flash websites and the shift does? I’m confused as to what this feature allows you to do.

    • Natasha, both phones can show Adobe Flash content. Do we say somewhere that one of the phones doesn’t show Adobe Flash? If so, it’d be great if you can point that out.

      Bob at Wirefly

  • Is the battery life the same in both phones?
How can I make the battery last longer?

  • Okay, I watched this video, and it still didn’t help me decide. I saw that the shift ran a little slower then the evo. But you didn’t talk about the texting on the evo enough. Is it easy to text on it? What about the camera’s? And apps, etc.

  • Actually, the evo 4g has a faster cpu, look at the Bogo MIPS scores in the video, the Evo 4G gets 662, and the Shift get 520, The difference is the Evo 4g has the Adreno 200 GPU, and the shift has a Adreno 205 gpu. Both phones are fast as hell though.

  • Why is there a 10 degree difference in temperature on the two phones? lol

  • Does the shift have both a touch keyboard as well as the slideout or just the slideout?

    • Jeff Gregory
      January 31, 2011

The Shift comes with both a touchscreen keyboard and a slide-out keyboard.

      Jeff Gregory

  • that is not mini hdmi. its a smaller port (micro maybe?)

  • Why does the icom on the Evo Shift look like it was in WIFI or 4G and the EVO was in 3G, would that make a difference in the speed test?

    • Yes, one phone was on WiFi and the other was on the carrier’s network. However, the test does not use the network at all and only tests the phone’s internal components. However, thank you for being som observant!

      Bob at Wirefly

  • doesnt the shift have flash? how much should that play into my descision?

    • The EVO Shift can play Adobe Flash content. As to how important that is to you, only you can decide that.

So all this makes me wonder is when does the true replacement for the Evo 4g come out? I can’t imagine not having a true keyboard but the Evo 4g still seems like the one to get. I just don’t want to get it and 2 months later have the real replacement come out. I’ve been in that position of feeling stuck before.

    • We don’t know when there will be a replacement for the HTC EVO 4G… we like to know those things, too. As of this moment, we are not aware of any replacement for the EVO 4G.

I asked a Sprint rep last night about the evo shift having a front facing camera. They said it does not have one.

  • you didn’t talk enough about the cameras, does the shift have a front facing camera?
