HTC ThunderBolt vs. Apple iPhone 4

Wirefly Learn » Android Phones

January 13th, 2011

The Apple iPhone 4 continues to be a leader in the wireless industry, and may find an even greater audience now that it is available on Verizon Wireless as well as AT&T. Dozens of new phones have been introduced to knock the iPhone 4 off its pedestal, many offering featuress unavailable on the iPhone, such as 4G networking, larger screens and Adobe Flash compatibility. The HTC ThunderBolt is one such phone, and it will run on Verizon’s new LTE 4G network. The addition of a large (4.3-inch) screen, a 1GHz processor and Android 2.2 will give the HTC ThunderBolt plenty of power as it goes to battle with the Apple iPhone 4. How do these two phones stack up in a comparison?

Key Differences

  • Display: The HTC ThunderBolt will have a 4.3-inch LCD display, while the Apple iPhone 4 measures in at 3.5 inches. Apple’s iPhone 4 leads the wireless industry with its 640 x 960-pixel resolution, a dot-pitch so fine that Apple refers to it as a “retina” display. At 480 x 800 pixels, the ThunderBolt looks crisp and clear, and its larger screen may make long-term viewing (of a movie, for example) more comfortable on the ThunderBolt than the iPhone 4.
  • Operating system: The HTC ThunderBolt will run Android 2.2, while the iPhone 4 is currently delivered with Apple’s iOS4.2 operating system. Apple has provided continuous upgrades to the iPhone’s operating system, and Android 2.2 is a fast and stable version of Google’s popular open operating system.
  • Processor and RAM: The HTC ThunderBolt has a 1GHz processor, as does the Apple iPhone 4. The ThunderBolt is expected to have 768MB of RAN, while the iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM.
  • Keyboard: Both the HTC ThunderBolt and the Apple iPhone 4 have on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboards.
  • Storage Space: The HTC ThunderBolt will ship with 16GB of onboard memory, and has a microSD slot that will accommodate memory cards up to 32GB. The Apple iPhone is available in either 16GB or 32GB models, but it does not have a memory card slot for expansion.
  • Camera: The HTC ThunderBolt will have an 8-megapixel still-image camera, while the Apple iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera. Both can record HD video at 720p resolution.
  • Battery life: The HTC ThunderBolt will have a 1,400 mAh lithium-ion battery that is replaceable by the user. This is substantially larger than the batteries currently available in Android phones. The Apple iPhone 4 has a built-in lithium-ion battery that is not user-replaceable.

One Response to “HTC ThunderBolt vs. Apple iPhone 4”

  • The RAM is 768mb and the battery is only 1400mAh other than that it is correct. Also Verizon will include a 32GB micro SD card with the phone so the storage is 40GB. Thanks for updating. I thought about getting the iPhone 4 but decided to wait a couple of weeks until the Thunderbolt is released. And if you live in a city like me that currently has 4G coverage you would be insane not to choose the Thunderbolt over the 3G iPhone 4. They claim 18MB download speeds through 4G are commonplace.
