When you think about the meaning of the word “smartphone,” the Apple iPhone 4 frequently pops up as the very definition of the term. Yet the iPhone 4 does not cover every possible base and that gives an opportunity for contenders to beat the iPhone 4 at the smartphone game. One such phone is the LG Optimus Black, which (among other things) debuts a new display technology that reportedly improves battery life and brightens images. Still, the Apple iPhone 4 is a tough competitor with legions of fans, and it is now offered by both Verizon Wireless and AT&T – the biggest carriers in the business. How do the Apple iPhone 4 and the LG Optimus Black stack up in a comparison?

Key Differences

  • Display: The LG Optimus Black will use a new display technology called NOVA, which LG says will be both brighter and more efficient than both LCD and AMOLED displays now in use on cell phones. The resolution of the 4-inch NOVA display is not yet known. The display on the Apple iPhone 4 is 3.5 inches, and the iPhone 4 leads the wireless industry with its 640 x 960-pixel resolution, a dot-pitch so fine that Apple refers to it as a “retina” display.
  • Operating system: The LG Optimus Black will run Android 2.2, while the iPhone 4 is currently delivered with Apple’s iOS4.2 operating system. Apple has provided continuous upgrades to the iPhone’s operating system, and Android 2.2 is a fast and stable version of Google’s popular open operating system.
  • Processor and RAM: The LG Optimus Black features a dual-core 1GHz processor, and promises to be very fast for both productivity and graphics applications. The Apple iPhone 4 has an A8 processor clocking in at 1GHz. The iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM.
  • Keyboard: Both the LG Optimus Black and the Apple iPhone 4 have on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboards.
  • Storage Space: LG has not yet announced the memory that will ship with the Optimus Black. The Apple iPhone 4 is available in either 16GB or 32GB models, but it does not have a memory card slot for expansion.
  • Camera: The Apple iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash, and can record 720p HD video. The camera specifications for the LG Optimus Black have not yet been announced.
  • Battery life: The LG Optimus Black will have a 1,500 mAh lithium-ion battery that is replaceable by the user. The company says the battery has a longer life in the Optimus Black due to the efficency of the phone’s NOVA display. The Apple iPhone 4 has a built-in lithium-ion battery that is not user-replaceable.
