One of the wireless hits at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was the Motorola Atrix 4G cell phone. Running on AT&T’s speedy HSPA+ 4G network, the Atrix 4G has a unique docking keyboard that turns the Atrix 4G from a cell phone into a compact computer. On the other hand, the Apple iPhone 4 casts a heavy shadow across any new cell phone, and all new phones get compared to the iPhone in one way or another. The Motorola Atrix 4G definitely has the power do go toe-to-toe with the iPhone 4, but how do these two cell phones compare when looking at a more complete set of features?

Key Differences

  • Display: The Motorola Atrix 4G has a 4.0-inch LCD display, but the big news is that it docks with an expansion module that has a keyboard and 11.3-inch monitor. The Apple iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch screen with the highest resolution of any cell phone: 640 x 960 pixels, which Apple calls a “retina” display.
  • Operating system: The Motorola Atrix 4G will run Android 2.2, a fast and stable operating system. Motorola promises an upgrade to Android 2.3 for the Atrix 4G by the end of 2011. The Apple iPhone 4 runs Apple’s iOS4.2, and continues to update the operating system on a regular basis.
  • Processor and RAM: The Motorola Atrix 4G features a dual-core 1GHz processor, and will be among the first cell phones to run with a dual-core processor. The Apple iPhone 4 has a single processor running at 1GHz. The Atrix 4G will have 1GB of processor-available RAM, while the Apple iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM.
  • Keyboard: Both the Motorola Atrix 4G and the Apple iPhone 4 have on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboards. However, the Atrix 4G will have a docking keyboard with full-size physical keys.
  • Storage Space: The Motorola Atrix 4G will ship with 16GB of onboard memory, and will have microSD slots that accommodate memory cards up to 32GB. The Apple iPhone 4 is available in 16GB and 32GB versions, but it has no expansion slot for more memory.
  • Camera: The Motorola Atrix and Apple iPhone 4 have 5-megapixel still-image cameras that can also record HD video at 720p resolution. Both have front-facing cameras for video chat, both at VGA-quality (640 x 480).
  • Battery: The Motorola Atrix 4G will have a 1,930 mAh lithium-ion battery that is replaceable by the user. The Apple iPhone 4 has an internal battery that is not replaceable by the user.

  • Anybody know of a app that will alow the Motorola ATRIX 4G phones to record incoming and outgoing telephone calls? Even one that could record from the speaker phone might would work.

I have looked on the market and find several apps that just do not work. Motorola is no help in this matter.

You can talk to other people without using Facetime. Download the app called Fring on your iPhone 4.

  • I agree with you i have owned both now and the functionality of the atrix blows the iphone out of the water. I phone is still the nicest looking device out there right now.

Apple wont do flash. steve jobs already said that. they are going to use html5…

the iphone is good at what it does and it was revolutionary 5 years ago but things change. it is no longer a 1 os market and people need to realize that.

I have read below article that explain very deeply about both products Fight????

  • Atrix has a locked and encrypted bootloader which is unacceptable for an Android phone.

please advise if motorola atrix has the following capabilities as i am visually handicaped. can you speak into unit and send emails in that fashion. are fonts enlargeable in the address book and on text messages. is skype software and in addition to skype telephone is the face to face video ommunications available on this unit.

    • Ron, we don’t have a Motorola Atrix yet, but hope to answer your questions when we have the Atrix and understand its abilities.

    • I understand that Skype does have some difficulty with the Atrix due to the speakers and it was said in multiple posts that even a bluetooth wireless device did not correct the problem. There is good face to face video communications available with the phone that unlike iPhone, can communicate with other phones that are not necessarily Atrix phones. iPhone can only video chat with other iPhones.
